Anyone been reading the news lately?

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/suicidal-dad-found-dead-after-16242864

This suicidal 34yr man was turned away after going to hospital, and killed himself 24 hrs later. It's disgusting they didn't help him even though he was pleading to be admitted. But I guess that's our UK NHS health service for you.

I've never been in hospital strictly because of a suicide attempt, but when I was trying to get help for my depression/self harm I was put on a 3 month waiting list and then told I clearly didn't qualify for help. That was 3 years ago?? And you have people saying, why don't you just go talk to someone or get some help. Its a total joke. I've found more help and support on this website then anywhere else.

There's lots of crap in the UK media about reaching out for help and how people don't do it.

The fact is it's a bit of a lottery in the UK anyway, regarding whether you'll receive any 'help' at all. Depending on which health trust you fall under.

Even if you're lucky enough to be in an area where there's some kind of provision, the system's not fit for purpose. Particularly with suicidal mental health related issues. It's a woefully inadequate points based system and when you have assessments based on that premise, again it's a lottery, depending on how good the assessor is at their job, or whether they actually give a shit in the first place.

Then you have the treatments which generally consist of poorly administered CBT and a completely non holistic approach. The NHS doesn't do 'joined up thinking'.

This is the kind of stuff I have been talking about for years. There are so many and very few hit news. About a month ago a veteran went to an ER and told them he was suicidal. He was turned away since he did not have insurance and he shot himself in the parking lot of the hospital. The system is designed to make $$$, not help the ones in need. I cannot barley leave bed how can I be expected to have insurance or a job? Yet I am waiting for SSDI, if I get denied I am gone. If that's how they want to treat people then I do not want to be here. I have been turned away for having no insurance or money to pay. My last psychologist called me to tell me she couldnt see me anymore due to I could not pay the $15 co-pay<I was on Medicade that was canceled shortly after this> that i never had before. No money, no insurance, tough shit... hippocratic oath my ass.

I was thinking myself about going to the psych hospital for help, I am not based in the UK, but honestly if you really want to end your misery how can they help you?
Maybe they can give you some benzos to calm you down, how will it change the situation? You cannot take benzos forever...and eventually they have to release you from the hospital...and you are back where you started...
Of course such an admission can be life-saving when you are impulsively suicidal...

110% agree; I don't want to force my opinion on anyone but Samaritans honestly is just a waste of time.. they just don't care about you or what your going through. Their only suggestion ever is go A&E if its that bad rather then being a service that lets you talk and discuss how you feel and find ways of resolving problems.

True. But some people want help, and when their desperately asking for it they're being denied it. Thats the problem.

Socialism is great huh! This is goin to get worse because when gov controls the healthcare this is what happens. It always starts out nice but then gradually NHS can no longer be sustained. Then people are dying because wait times increase, it becomes difficult to afford or access, and the quality of care goes down. It's happening in the US too. Probably all formerly wealthy countries. Obviously there are still wealthy people here but the middle class has been hollowed out.

When healthcare revolves around making money or saving money, this kind of stuff happens. When nation's are being run by hardcore neoliberals or fascists, the budgets for everything there to help your average person gets cut, cut and cut or the costs go up. If you are waiting for disability benefits, the judge will probably find some reason to disqualify you unless you are dying. It seems they only give them to people who are dying so they don't have to spend too much $$$ on them. SSI, SSDI and all that stuff becomes useless if the people in power don't divert enough funds to them... If any kind of welfare or whatever has a insufficient amount of funds, then people will be forced to play the lottery of life or death. And the Republicans and all their supporters are obsessed with putting an end to all welfare so what do you expect? These fuckers are sociopaths. It's only a matter of time before they get rid of all the benefits that old people have like social security, medicare etc. And those are benefits, they earned from a lifetime of work in most cases... So if they are willing to do that... Imagine what they are willing to do to younger generations...

Socialism can't get work if neoliberals and fascists in power are sabotaging it. People in power are intentionally making it so it doesn't work. And anyone who isn't on board with their agenda will get fired. In other words, what you are seeing is socialism being destroyed.

I don't even know why some of you even bother to get "help." in a system where nobody gives a fuck about you and the majority of people are extremely ignorant due to being brainwashed cultists. Most of the people who want to CTB don't need to get "help" from some psych ward or doctor or whatever. No psych ward or doctor etc is going to make all your troubles go away magically. A psych ward is just really a prison designed to prevent people from CTBing. People NEED REAL HELP. Help with money, help with building up a decent future, help moving to a place on Earth where they can actually live like human beings... The kind of help, their family should be giving them but they were unfortunate enough to born in a completely useless family of sociopaths while at the same time, being born in a completely useless society run by sociopaths. So in other words, there will never ever be any real help for anyone. It seems people have forgotten what real help looks like in 2019. Everything that is seen as a "mental illness" is usually a symptom of living a really shitty life not designed for human beings...

Yeah, it's like being a chieftain of a tribe a long time ago. And my people are going mad from starvation, disease, war, stress and constant fear. No, they don't need to be locked up or lectured or given some pills and treated like freaks of nature. They need healthy food. They need a healthy environment. They need peace. They need law and order. They need a reason to want to live every time they wake up. They need happiness. Not having to fight in a class war 24/7. Not having to constantly fight for resources on a daily basis to survive. They need a real family. They need real friends.

I'm in the US and after I got out of a cult and realized that that's what I had been in, I was very damaged physically and mentally. I was having an existential crisis and was basically at the point of "I'll try one more time before I ctb" so I called the Suicide Hotline and explained as well as I could how I was feeling. The person on the other end told me I was calling the wrong number even though I was suicidal. My memory is bad, but I'm pretty sure I attempted shortly after that. :')

No, I'm speaking in terms of Robert Jay Lifton's Eight Criteria for Thought Reform and cult psychology on a clinical level, not society's definition that is based on a lot of misinformation.

I'm the uk. Police took me to A&E on May 10th for my own safety after a suicide attempt. 130 am they discharged me after not even looking at me and sent me home with no money, no phone I had. 30 mile walk ahead of me, the hospital knew this but just didn't care. We will be putting in an official complaint soon to PALs.

They system sucks mental health is becoming more known and in some ways a less taboo subject, but then the help just isn't there, nor the funding for anything,

You got lucky. The alternative would have been being sent to a psych ward far from home, locked up and treated like shit for weeks or months... And then being kicked out, which would mean a lot of your precious time being wasted, you losing your job etc... In the USA, people who get forced to go to these places also end up with a bill for thousands of dollars. These places are only there to prevent you from killing yourself and to prevent you from killing other people or harming other people. They are mostly, just there to make "normal" people feel safe because the thought of a bunch of suicidal people running around amongst them, terrifies them because they are insanely paranoid. In their pathetic little minds, every time they think of a suicidal person, they see images of some guy going postal with an assault rifle or a knife etc. Because unfortunately, once in awhile, some suicidal people do crazy and insanely selfish shit like that to commit suicide. But it's rare. Very rare...

They also serve the purpose of creating lists of people who could potentially be dangerous in the future... For example, in the USA, if you get sent to a psych ward, you have to wait many years before you are allowed to purchase a firearm etc. There's no magical cure waiting for you inside to make all your problems go away. The only person who can make all your problems go away is yourself(if you have what it takes) or some benevolent and powerful being otherwise you are screwed.

I was referred to NHS mental health services in November as an 'urgent' referral and I'm still on the waiting list.

I missed a call while I was at work and just called them back, and the operator just told me that whoever called me will call again later. Not exactly convenient since the woman who called probably won't hear that I tried to call back, which probably increases the chance of them assuming I'm not interested in treatment anymore.

I went to A&E once when I was feeling suicidal like you're advised to. They said there was nothing wrong with me and that I was just 'upset', told me that a very close friend of mine didn't care about me or what I was going through, told me off for donating to charities/giving money to the homeless, and that I needed to stop relying on my friend for emotional support. Then they asked if I felt better, I told them I felt worse, and they said it was 'normal' to feel worse after opening up (I usually feel better after doing so) and sent me home.

Nearly attempted a couple of weeks later but backed out as I realised ODing again wouldn't work, and a couple weeks after that attempted twice.

In my opinion it comes down to the luck of where you live and how good/funded your mental health services are. In my experience most people in the system care and want to help but without they're severely underfunded and understaffed so there's not much they can do.

I'm sorry to hear the state of mental health services for people in the UK. This is eye opening information and it is sad that for the people who genuinely want help (like being admitted to a ward voluntarily and really crying out for help) don't get it. Yet the people who just want to die and genuinely want to die, gets intervention and prevented from exiting this hell hole. It should be the other way around, the people who desperately WANT to be saved and recover to be able to get the services they are requesting, while the ones who want to quietly leave in peace be respected and allowed to die on their own terms. Sadly, the world and the system is upside down.

Well some cops, just like to pick on weaker people to make themselves feel strong. Fortunately all the cops I encountered, grew out of that phase except this one British customs officer...

Oh, in my case. They just forced me to go into an ambulance. You probably live in one of those parts of the USA, where there is a lack of resources so the cops have to handle almost everything there. Do you live in a red state?

I'm in the southwest of the UK, Seriously lacking in any funding at all. I love the fact urgent means adding to a waiting list and at some point in the near future they may or may not get in touch. What's the point, by then it may be too late.

The local government in your part of the UK is probably too busy spending most of the money that should be going into healthcare on £500 champagne bottles for their parties... Because who is going to stop them?

Yeah, my trust has apparently been downgrading urgent referrals from doctors to routine, which is probably what happened to mine. A few people have committed while on waiting lists where I am, maybe two or three I've seen in the news. Probably more that haven't been reported though. It's an awful state.
