I have a couple thousand dollars in my savings account. My family is financially secure so I am not concerned about giving them the money so I think I'd like to donate everything I personally have before I go. Would it appear sketchy to be donating large sums of money? Is there a discrete way of doing this?

Você pode doar para Médicos sem Fronteiras. Tem algumas opções de doação no site. Não sei se existe limite para a doação.

Donating isn't sketchy. Your bank statements are private records. How would anyone know? I highly doubt the bank employees are going to report you for emptying your account. You can contact your preferred charities/organizations and ask how to make an anonymous donation, but that's probably not necessary since most of them like receiving free money and aren't likely to complain about it.

Could i ask you to come here to brazil, get me a good lawyer and, well, save me from being labelled crazy as well as rescue me from the drug rehab prison i am currently locked in? Not that i think this would happen, but still, it's not like i have a lot of hopes remaining.

Isn't there a limit to bank transactions though? I'm just concerned that it might look odd to be donating all my savings to a mental health charity.

Hahahaha. I wish you all the best. Not that I don't want to help, I just want to donate in a way that will be the most effective in terms of helping the most people long term

I'd be very careful with organization if you want to make sure you money helps people. Suicide hotlines, Salvation Army & United Way spend way more in salaries & the programs they provide in some instances are not cost effective. I've worked for non profits, battered woman's shelters specifically that housed families for 2400 a month in group settings while that amount of money would have been better spent just relocating them to a safe private home. at half the cost. Not saying there aren't good nonprofits? especially for animals. But there seems to be better treatment and less manipulation of funds diverted to salaries within orgs in my experience.
How wonderful you have the presence of mind to think of others in the midst of your own struggles

Visit Charity Navigator and find the cause that moves you. Personally, my default is Care International

There is no limit. Banks have to report 10k+ to the IRS

If I were you, though, I'd just put the bequeathment in my will.

Yes, I am going to choose carefully. Okay. Even if it was for some reason investigated, the bank isn't gonna contact my family immediately right? I'll just donate it the day I go.

If it just a few grand and you're over 18, they shouldn't bat an eye. Some savings accounts let you write a few checks -- maybe you can do it that way too.

What I'm concerned about is my bank transactions being examined shortly after and then they will see that I've checked into a hotel and then I will be saved ... am I just overestimating the amount of attention people are going to pay? I can't fuck this up

Yes I'm over 18. Sorry, I probably sound so dumb. I'm just anxious.

Unless someone is already privy & watching your spending I don't see why donations should ring any alarms unless it's a huge amount your bank itself would question.

Most charities you can donate to anonymously, though you probably wouldn't even need to do that. I made donations that were marked as anonymous on charity navigator, but that was just to avoid giving personal info or being on mailing lists etc, and the amounts were much smaller. I don't know how secret it needs to be, but just to avoid general suspicion? I think you'll be fine even if it's not anonymous. I would only avoid political donations as those are public, but even then, I doubt anyone would be actively looking for that information and then assuming you were going to ctb. As has been mentioned, you could also set up something for after death. Out of curiosity, would you be okay sharing what your preferred charities are? I sometimes like to donate to try and hate myself less. I usually go for direct relief, water for people, action against hunger usa, along with some local things and animal charities.

I guess i could use either but they are both under my name so couldn't they see both regardless?
Use the credit card. The debit card may place hold on a portion of bank balance.

Make a will. Gifts are generally nonrescindable and if you survive or abort your plan you'll have no savings at all.

As to the beneficiary: what do you value in this life? That should tell you all you need to know.

No-one will care if you donate a couple of thousand bucks.

Another reason to avoid gifts is that your family will get shafted with the bill for your funeral if you don't have anything. Of course I don't know if that matters in this case but I wouldn't want my family to have to deal with that aswell.

If the inheritance law in your country is anything like in mine the inheritance will firstly be used to cover the remaining costs (in this case the funeral) and then it will be handed over to the beneficiaries. In that case my guess would be there won't be a lot if anything left. Funerals are fairly expensive from what I've heard. Your family might still need to chip in.

As to your question about a worthy goal: you might consider an organisation that furthers the goal of legalisation of suicide and/or aims to defend the rights of those involuntarily committed. Any organisation that aims to lessen suffering really, be it human or animal.

As for me I'd split my savings in four equal parts: 1) WWF, 2) UNICEF, 3) Greenpeace and 4) my godson and my nephews (1/2 to the former, the rest divided among the latter). I don't know of any organisation in my country that furthers the rights of the mentally ill otherwise I would include it aswell.

Just an idea: Do you know/Did you notice some people living on the streets somewhere near you? You could give them some bills. This way you could get some gratitude personally maybe, if that matters to you in any way and you made another mans womans less shittier. It would mean a lot to them.
Of course... there's the problem with that fakers ("homeless-fakers" - that pile of shits), so I would only spend some money to the ones, who I'm certain of, that he/she is homeless.

For the big organizations: I'm never sure if my money actuelly arrives where it should arrive. Ribbon or not. But that may be just me.
