Suicides worldwide each year: Around 700,000-800,000

Attempted suicides worldwide each year: Around 15 million

Survivors with permanent disabilities each year: Around 2.5 million

If life is such a gift, why do so many people want to leave? This isn't even about personal suffering anymore, it's just raw math. How can pro-lifers look at this and think, yeah, let's have kids! Truth is, biological programming is a hell of a drug. Throw religion into the mix, and people will keep feeding this cycle forever.

Suicide kills less than 1 in 10,000/year. Kind of surprised by that.

Honestly it's to me that funny that we see depression as "abnormal"… since looking at literature throughout different centuries and modern statistics…it seems like "happiness" is actually the more "abnormal" feeling.

That's honestly why I hate antidepressants; I would much rather be sad and feel "real" feelings than chemically alter my brain so I can tolerate a terrible existence… to… what? Go to work? Stare at my phone at lunch? Smile at a customer while they scream at me??

i feel the same way. i get why people find taking medication necessary but i don't like the idea of not feeling like "me" anymore.

The number of suicides are greatly underestimated. I've seen the real estimated numbers. Accidents, overdoses, etc.

Exactly, it's an imposition governed by extreme biological survival instinct. That's not a gift, that's a prison sentence.

I remember a Holocaust survivor recounting a scene where someone asked where God was, and another man pointed at the bodies and said something along the lines, "There he is. There's God."

That line always stuck with me.

I understand, it's just so horrible to me how this existence that just causes all this harm and suffering was even imposed at all, I'll just always see it as the most terrible, dreadful abomination to suffer in this existence, all that existence ever does is torture existing beings with no limit as to how much agony one can feel.

It's so disgusting to me when humans refer to being forced to suffer in this painful and torturous existence as a gift, to me existence is the most terrible mistake that causes endless amounts of torture with existing beings in agony every second. I see the existence of life as the most terrible, devastating tragedy, I'll always see it as the most dreadful, undeserved punishment to exist and there's just so much evil in existing, for me only non-existence could ever be positive, only in non-existence will I be at peace from the suffering, torture and evil of existing.

Maybe unpopular opinion on here, but the reason people say life is a gift is because it genuinely is a gift to them. Most people actually like living and are relatively happy. We just drew the short straw.

I understand what you're saying, but that's hard math, not personal feelings. 1 million suicides a year doesn't lie, life ain't no fucking gift.

15 million attempts, and god knows how many miserable people. Personal happiness aside, that proves life isn't a beautiful gift beyond a shadow of a doubt. Good discussion though, i like being challenged, it's important not to create an echo chamber.

Keep in mind, this doesn't include all the people currently being murdered in wars around the world, or the 10,000 children who starve to death every single day.

Extremist Capitalism did this.

When ten people are worth the same as four billion others, and those ten people are psychopaths who love watching people die, then there will be blood.

That 2.5 million number is what scares me the most about this whole deal. I don't want to fail.

I don't get how that's possible-do they not see all the suffering happening to others, do they just not care? I couldn't stop thinking about that Swiss resort fire for like a week after it happened. Now maybe it's because of my OCD that I overly focus on the suffering, but I wouldn't change it-I don't want to ignore all the people in unbearable pain. OK it's true that I can't personally do anything about it so it's futile-but it's not something I can turn off. Does that make me mentally ill to be so affected by this? It's not even about my own life most of the time. I feel such relief knowing when I'm gone I'll never have to hear about some poor elderly person being neglected in a care home, or mugged, some child being abused to death, natural disasters, animal abuse, people dying in corridors under the NHS etc. how can anything in life possibly be worth all that tragedy.

To this day nobody has ever told me exactly what makes life a gift. Once again, its either religion shilling, or some stupid platitude everytime. They dont even know what makes life a gift! They just "get it", and I just dont.
