Jumpers: is it better to fall forward or backward so as not to land on your feet?

My bridge is around 800ft. Personally, I'm the type who looks when blood is taken, so falling backward and not knowing when I hit makes me uncomfortable.
Well I'm not sure if there's a certain technique to it but at that hight gravity should be enough but don't take my word on that. I considered that years ago, but I'm afraid of heights.
All that really matters is that you don't hit anything along the way that would shorten your fall. The only way you can survive is if you land on a tree after 40 feet or something.
