Venting I've never been told "I love you"

Why? Because you will never have to prove or demonstrate your love in any substantial or meaningful way, other than writing feel-good posts to them, since they are a total stranger who you'll never get to see. I like a few people on this forum, but claiming that I "love" anybody would be a definite exaggeration which devalues the meaning of the word. The word itself has become so trivialized and overused that it completely lost its original meaning.

But twice in my life, I heard a magic phrase which virtually brought tears to my eyes which no family member or other relation in my life has ever come close to saying, "I'm gonna take care of you!," and "We'll take care of you." The feeling of flooded relief hearing the words assuring me that I would be taken care of remain forever priceless to me. Love, on the other hand, is among the filthiest four letter words in the English language the way it's been ruthlessly used by evil loveless cretins to control me while growing up. I don't think my parents ever told me they loved me. Whenever I asked them if they hated me, they'd say: "No, you are our child." But they never said they loved me. I appreciate their honesty, though.

I suppose being brought up during WW2 had some bearing on their relative lack of emotions

I think someone has said this before but being loved and the feeling of being loved is different to someone saying they love you (which I think is also different than someone having love for you - but I digress).
Telling someone you love them isn't always a hollow display or manipulation, but it could be and it's easy.
Showing love is harder but achievable with work and for a lot of people unless the conditions (and reciprocation is there) are met showing that love isn't worth it in the long run, so they resort to saying it and meaning it, then saying and not not meaning it and then saying nothing at all and worse, doing nothing at all.
I'm sorry no one has ever said they love you, in light of what I've just written this might be a touch ironic but I do believe there is love for you here, as much as is possible across the world on the other end of a keyboard.

Personally in my family we don't say it... and if we do it's rare. It's an unspoken unconditional thing. My ex-wife and I used to say it and I'm sure at one time it meant something, after 20 years with her... I'm sure they were just words out of habit.

I at least get told this by friends and family and even though I often doubt the authenticity of it, I couldn't imagine how hard it must be to be starved of even that. I've tunnel-visioned myself into also only wanting to be told I love You from a special someone but that special someone won't come for me. I wish you luck that at least somebody will come along and tell you this one day.
