I've grown so cynical, everywhere I look people are competing for money, status, sex etc. In fact, the entire world revolves around money, everybody wants to get the most for themselves at the expense of eveyone else, and that has taken a toll on society. I try to not see the world this way, but it's so hard, and it's been making more unhappy. I live with teenagers and all of them lie so much to impress others, a lot of them are arrogant, they gossip all the time and are full of hypocrisy. I can't believe anything someone says these days, they tell me they are a christian and the next day they are talking shit about someone to me, it is mind-blowing

And then I look at my friends and the few people I talk to and I realize that I'm just one more to them, soon we are all going to follow different paths and I will have to meet new people, and it all seems so futile. I don't know how to change these thoughts, maybe what I said is all true, but I don't know if I wanna look it that way

and what is the problem? You are describing reality as it is, everything is hypocritical in this society and we are the same, more or less, you just have to learn to live in that duality and be careful with whom you talk about these kinds of things, some simply will not understand you or will not want to listen to you , in the end everything is a game with its respective social rules
To avoid the discomfort you feel from seeing this, you could try to understand why it works like this, I see that as a society we are tired and constantly manipulated so that we are in that state that you mention
On the other hand, perhaps you lack people to talk about more transcendental topics
From what I read, you are young, and you are at the age of change, perhaps, be calm, it is just one more process in life
greetings, be well

The only way things will ever change is if people don't give up on trying to cause that change. If every individual thinks "Oh, well nobody else is gonna try, so why should I?" then obviously nobody will ever try, but if each individual thinks "I'll try to change things" then eventually, individuals will become groups, which will eventually become society. It's easy to become cynical, and I'd be lying if I said I don't find myself in your exact situation from time to time. But, younger generations are becoming more and more positive and stubborn. Kids these days are being more and more accepting of others, and more determined to change the way things are. So, while the world may be a cesspool today, just give it time. Change will come, and the world will be better. It just take enough individuals who want that change. :)

This is pretty much the same way I feel, it just seems like everyone either wants your money or, if you don't have any, they want to use you to make money in some way.
Being under psychiatric support it just felt like I was there to provide these people with a job even though they did nothing for me. The whole medical establishment feels corrupt, I don't think the individuals working in it have bad intentions it's just there are external factors driving all their decisions, like they just want to give you a drug or procedure that some company is going to profit from.
All I can say is keep trying, there are genuine people out there offering life changing help and don't want anything in return, I know because I found some but they seem few and far between unfortunatly among a sea of grifters.

I deeply relate to this. I think any kind of recovery has to be done in the context of not living in a fantasy world. This is why recovery is so difficult, because it means training towards a kind of heroic mental strength that will help you navigate a world where everyone has spent a lifetime cultivating their mask. The best you'll find are people who recognize they're deeply flawed but genuinely mean well and don't want to manipulate you. But these people are very rare and not really accessible for most people.

I don't think it's black and white, I don't think people are good or bad, but... there's just a lot of bad in basically everyone even if there's some good, that it puts a bad taste in your mouth. Once you see what's behind the curtain, it ruins the entire show.

I'm not sure why you think they are confused or that their words don't make sense.

It seems clear that they are feeling unhappy with the state of the world as they see it. I can't say I blame them! I'd hate to be young now. So much does seem to be about image and representation on social media. It's no wonder they feel the people around them are lieing to look good and get the upper hand. I expect they probably are! I'd agree that a lot of people are out to make money too. I'm just as cynical to be honest!

Occasionally though OP, you may come across someone who has values more aligned to you. It's probably good that you are about to part company with your current class mates- hopefully, in the next group of people , there will be some who are more about genuine friendship rather than status and image. My better friendships were made at college and university. I think it helps to have a shared interest in the same subject for one. Here's hoping!

i suppose i am as well then, but i think this isn't very far from reality. money drives society. i can't even lie, I've succumbed to these desires. im hoping to work in computer science, even though i hate everything about it, simply for money.

i think a less cynical way of thinking is that yes we do chase those big 3 desires, but perhaps it isn't so bad. I mean, sex is directly related to love. many people don't just chase money for selfish reasons either; they do it to give back to family and provide. status is a bit iffy, unless you relate it back to money.
