I want to start from scratch for real. I threw away my Sim card and bought another one with a new phone number. Just saving the important contacts. I feel free, like starting over.

Damn. Good for you. Bravo. Life was a lot easier before the internet. But alas...
other than this site, the vast majority of social media consists of the most stupid, moronic people and superficial nonsense. Books still work (even if large print is necessary now). Lectures and discussions still abound on YouTube. But Twatter and FB are moronic, imo, and epitomize the worst garbage our society promotes. Dumb, dumber, and dumbest.

Congrats! I am newer at the social tech scene, and I think it is a good idea. You are a smart person; I have always liked you and your ideas, and I watch closely what I do on the net and my phone.

I have had id theft once in my life and it was hell. Never want to go through it again and never wish anything of the nature on anyone.

Always my best to you and have a great weekend.

I love it without social media accounts. I wish I could start my life over by leaving everything behind and moving to a new place.

Good for you. I deleted all of my social media accounts several years ago. I don't even miss it. A lot of what is on social media is superficial and negative anyway. I feel I am better off without it. Also I was surprised at how much free time I had when I first stopped going on social media everyday. I didn't realize how much time I was wasting until I stopped using it.

Although I do get strange looks from some people when they tell me to friend them on FB so we can keep in touch, and I tell them that I don't have a FB account.

There is a way to get rid of your facebook feed. I don't see any posts from people on facebook anymore. It eased a lot for me. It is a great tool for me to keep in touch with some people. At most, I spend 5 minutes a day on it.

However, I will gladly agree that social media can be awful poison for many.

Fuck those people. Do what is best for you. I deleted all my social media accounts about maybe 3 weeks ago and I don't even miss it.

I had deleted social media and got it back and I hate it.

But more than social media I hate what's app. But how else can I communicate without it. I really want what's app gone from my phone.

Social media can be so harmful.

I've gone to peer into photographs or the past and it is simply no good. Best to just erase it all and leave it behind.

I'm too sad now anyway.

I agree. It's like cutting off the prisoners ball and chain.

Except for this wonderful site, I have NEVER been on social media and NEVER will. I have through the decades been bombarded by Telemarketers, and scam emails crap and to fuel the fire is just plain stupid as far as I am concerned.

I have had ID theft one time and that was a total nightmare and that was an eye opener for/to me.

Like everything in life, everything comes with a plus and minus and I prefer to mitigate the minus as far down as possible.

This site is wonderful, and it is an exception as far as we are a huge family here that looks out for each other and that really makes a difference.

Congratulations. You have discovered what I discovered about a decade ago.

Social media is junk. It enables the government to spy on you and makes you miserable and waste time as well

Sorry to revisit this previous post, but I am wondering exactly how you "use" facebook without there being a feed. Do you have a business page only? What exactly are you seeing and doing? How are you keeping in touch with people without seeing their posts in a feed and commenting?

Why you hate whatsaap? It is the only app I keep to talk to friends.

Visit people's pages every so often see what has changed in their lives. Messenger is very useful to get a hold of people that I might not have their number or talk to often. Various groups and meetups still. Facebook marketplace is great. I do a lot of selling and buying there.

Oh okay. It seems like it would take forever to 'visit' person by person, with accumulated posts to get through. I'm not sure that would really save me any time, but maybe? Do you use UblockOrigin or FB Purity to do it, or is there a different way? Or I should ask what is the easiest way?

Apps like Facebook and Instagram have changed a lot compared to the beginning. It isn't just social: they're now emphasizing creators. So if you still like either app, you can sign up with your new number and reject permission for the apps to fetch your contacts. With the old number, even if you don't let the app access your contacts, Meta still finds a way to show you close contacts, which is super creepy. That's why I recommend signing up either with a new number or an email address you've never used before with your mates.

Then, you can follow the accounts that make you feel better. Whether it's 9GAG, trashy BuzzFeed videos, or fun animals on The Dodo, you'll make a feed that is all about the stuff that you actually want to see. And of course, there is Reels, which is basically TikTok, so you have a practically infinite feed of videos you might enjoy. Or you can download TikTok and use the advice in the first paragraph if you don't like Reels.

This is a quick guide on how to avoid the whole close contacts thing while still using these social media apps to your advantage. YMMV.

So both of these work. This is very interesting. I almost felt "relief" or something like that to have the news feed gone. I think something about the news feed makes the FB experience similar to reward seeking--even if I'm not posting anything or looking for likes and comments and even though I force it to remain chronological (via FB Purity). I think my internet usage is like a behavioral addiction, even the way I use this site.

Apologies to the OP (@edu0z) for hijacking the thread. I hope school is going well for you!!!

Yeah, getting rid of fakebook and instafake was one of the best things I ever did. I rarely ever talked with anyone on those sites anyway despite having many 'friends'. Yeah 'friends' oh how naïve I was. Always stayed away from tiktok and snapchat. I still have a twitter but I only use it for customer service questions lol. Yeah, twitter is actually really good for customer service, I used it often when I was an internet seller on ebay and Mercari. That's the only thing I really used it for as they'd answer questions quicker.

You have no idea how terrible are social media.
They are really horrible, it makes you feel dread and nothing more than that.
I understand this feeling very well and I'm happy that you are too now.

I'm not on social media and I feel so much better for it. I have a little old fashioned cellphone kinda like the old Nokia's and I tell people if they want to contact me they have the option of phone or email. (Emails and admin stuff are done on my tablet which stays at home) Works fine so far and I have been doing this for several years. YouTube is cool though for technical/how to stuff or for programming/language learning content as well as music whenever I get bored of the local radio stations. There's only so much of that freaky deeky song I can take

Fb and Twitter are dominated by users with certain ideologies. Their censorship teams and AI probably also share those values, or with such backgrounds. They ban other opinions so easily.

I get shadow banned on social media because their stupid algorithm misinterpreted my posts. Having been in the social work / welfare sector, I had posted a lot of stuff for victim-survivors of domestic violence / child abuse, trying to help them find their self worth. If you post a lot of stuff like that, even if it's positive and nice for victim-survivors to read, the social media ai / algorithm (or whatever the fk it's called) picks out "violence" or "abuse" and shadow bans you. Fudgebook.

At first, someone I used to go to school with found me on another website and asked if I would join Facebook. I did so reluctantly. Then, people I went to school with or people from my past, added me as friend. After a time, you realise that you no longer have anything in common with them or it's just shallow communication. It started off with lots of activity, then, now, most people wouldn't even notice if I went months without being on FB.

Plus, stalker found me online, because following me IRL isn't enough, apparently. I block his accounts and everyone on his friends lists, but he made accounts in fake names. He started to twig as to places I might go to, via my interests (even though I'd hidden them), then turn up there. He would wait outside for me with an evil grin on his face and wave at me like he thinks it's a game that he's won. Police do nothing about him. Tried changing my name on FB and profile picture, made no difference.

Facebook just gave me more anxiety.

Same here, i delete it and then I come back. Now I have started to create fake profile on twitter, not sure if I will follow up on other media. Twitter give a sort of immediate satisfaction. I would like to get out of that but I do not know how.
