I would say that the two main developments in society during the last half of the 20th to early 21 century, absolute individualism and the development of the welfare state, both of which to my mind simply make a select section of people obsolete. Don't get me wrong I belive that in general both of these have been positive for a majority of the population, but it leaves no value for the individual as such. People will be cared for no matter what, the previously having a steady job meant that you reached as far as you could and that you were relatively in a good position in society. Now the difference between the employed and uneployed on the lower end is so small that it's hardly noticable. People also don't work in units but everyone is by necessity out for their own sucess and happiness and honestly most people achive this even if there are dark spots here and there. Society is on the surface fantically devoted to everyone living but we hardly ever consider what such a life might entail. For a subset of people it's just a humiliating grind without any real chance of ever being respected or valuable by society in any way. It just seems like the natural next move of society even though people deny it.

I mean, in certain countries, it has become normal just because of the sheer number of people who CTB. I don't think it will ever be acceptable because I don't think neurotypical people will ever understand what it's like to have pain that doesn't stop and can't be fixed.
