Looking at doing this today or tomorrow.
What is best to use?
Weber Briquettes? Im in the UK so unsure what to get?
Guessing this method will produce a fair bit of smoke?
What is best to put the charcoal in?

For this I suggest something made out of stone or metal, so you don't light your house on fire, and also it helps if you tape/isolate the room you are doing it in, but I warn you, there is a chance that you might fail due to other things such as not enough coal, the faster you could build CO the better.
As for symptoms, they can range from a mild headache if you do it quick enough or hallucinations and a bad stomach ache at worst.

Would doing it in a car be good enough?

I don't know, but it might work but you don't want to light the interior on fire, be careful not to do that, dying by being burned alive is far worse than CO poisoning.
Make sure you close all of the windows of the car as tightly as possible so there is less air in there. And make sure to resist the oxygen deprivation if SI kicks in.
Overall, I don't recommend a car because it will be easy to light it on fire but it's up to you what you do.

Well I've brought charcoal, a foil container, a ceramic plant pot and a lighter. Surely the ceramic would soak up the heat?

Well, it should be good enough, although I recommend stone or metal. Good luck!
