Like the title says, would booking a room in a hotel in my home town just a couple miles away from my billing address raise any red flags or would I be better off travelling a few towns over under the guise of spending a weekend away? I'd rather not have to spend hours ruminating on a literal bus on my way to my destination but I'm not sure if questions would be asked if I checked in just a couple of districts away from my home address.

Who would be asking the questions? I don't think the hotel staff would be. If someone, like a family member, sees your purchases then they would definitely be suspicious

Suspicious for stuff like drug deals or prostitution maybe.

Not suicide though.

They probably won't care, when I worked jobs that involved booking people I don't remember asking too many profound questions about why each person is staying. You are more likely to be hooking up with someone than Ctb.

I don't know I wouldn't put it past them to have a system in place to flag room bookings which meet certain criteria and ask questions. CTB is bad for business.

I don't think you have to worry. It's business, they don't care. If they had to flag everyone that would be a nightmare. If you have to have a story then say your apartment is being fumigated or painted and you are allergic to the smell. Don't offer the information. Just go in like you own the place, pay for your room and there ya go (or just get your keys if you've paid online already)

You could be renting it for a friend staying in town. We have done that before. @Retched has a good idea.

I do that shit all the time. You can just tell them you needed a break from the wife or something if you feel paranoid about it. But they don't give a fuck and they never ask.

I'm the most suspicious looking person ever and no hotel has ever asked me any questions or declined me service.

It probably wouldn't be very suspicious because I've had friends and family members take mini vacations at local hotels.

It depends on the hotel. I know because of crime, many hotels/motels/hostels in my city don't book locals. Your identification has to show you live a certain distance away to book. I'd call ahead of time to make sure.

I've never heard of that before. There are any number of reasons a local might want to stsy in a local motel, besides the aforementioned fight with spouse, roomate, whatever. Heater or AC not working, washed the rug and now the air smells toxic until it airs out, neighbors throwing loud party. You could probably think of lots more. In fact when i was travelling i stayed in motels local with my home address countless times. My home address was just a mail drop but they didn't know that. I was never questioned once.

I think it's a weird rule, but it makes sense for some locations.

Google "No locals hotel policy" and you'll see that it does happen.

Regardless, a phone call to check in advance doesn't hurt.

unless you've done something to raise flags over your behavior, I doubt anyone who has the capability to look at all your information like that is paying attention. Maybe if you live in a really small town or personally know staff/owners of the hotel, but otherwise I don't think anyone would notice.

In a Broken relationship situation staying in a local motel is not suspect at all. Don't offer any explanation, just say you need a room for a night or two, any questions then say argument with partner.

No, a lot of folks book hotels when they're having work done on their houses or even family disputes.
