At least because there was no Instagram and people were living in real life instead of chasing ratings and make thousands of virtual friends online. I hate technologies. Smartphone is the best tool to get suicidal nowdays.
All of the problems that we already have will just get worse. Deforestation, less resources, littering, global warming etc...
less greenery, more humans littering the planet, more water being stolen and packaged
Before 2000s were good.
2001 gave us 9/11 and the war on terror and the patriot act. That was when the world began it's descent into madness. That was when the powers that be stopped trying to hide their lies and gave us full-on Orwellian double-speak through shit-eating grins. That's why everybody and their mother now buys every bullshit conspiracy theory that crosses their path - because everything our governments tell us is a fucking lie and nobody knows what to believe.
Now we can't even hold evil people responsible for their evil actions for fear of offending one group or another.
The world's gone insane, and it's only going to get worse.

there will be a devastating economic crisis and the balance of power will shift, this usually means a lot of conflicts around the globe. This was already going to happen anyway, but corona and other crises accelerated the process almost exponentially.
also, authoritarianism is on the rise everywhere and freedoms are being slowly eroded, new technologies are already being used in a shitty and controlling way so there's no telling just how much worse it's going to get in a couple of years.
