A notable number of suicides by firearm. 49,500 is a lot. Here in the forum we often talk about disabled people or failed suicides by firearm. How many failed suicides involving a firearm in 2022 in the USA?

I doubt the numbers would be easy to find, but the failure rate for suicide by firearm is pretty low. Safest bet is to target the heart, not the brain. It takes less damage to the heart to kill you than the brain. Lobotomies are a perfect example. You stick an ice pick in someone's heart, and they are going to die - just maybe not instantly.

Yet statistics say that the shotgun blast to the head is the most lethal among all suicide methods.

Ok so this is a rough estimate using both the data from the amount of suicides with a gun in the USA in 2022 (around 27,000) and the suicide fatality rate (89.7%) So doing the math to get the aproximate estimate of all firearm suicide attempts both successful/unsuccessful gets you a number of 30,100. Then subtracting that number by the successful attempts, 27,000, gets you a rough idea of the amount of failed attempts in America in 2022, which is 3,100.

One of the biggest flaws in this though is that most of the numbers in both of these studies are rounded or generalized so this is really just a educated guess on it of what the number could be. Also sorry if my math is wrong I'm not good at math.

I don't think it's the most lethal. I would bet high explosives like c4 or anfo have basically a 0% survivability rate. Same with laying on a grenade.

Not common, but can't say no one ever uses these.

I would also bet a shotgun or rifle blast to the heart is statistically more lethal than the head. People can survive with half a brain and no face. Hole anywhere in the heart and it's a wrap.

Yes, but explosives are impossible to find. Gino Paoli Alessandro Moggi He shot himself in the heart in 1963 and a few days ago he turned 90. He is one of the most famous singers in Italy and perhaps the oldest living. The bullet is still in the heart after 61 years.
