I really love cats and recently I lost my cat, I really want to adopt this cat I saw at an rescue center, he's 9 months old, the thing is that I don't know when I'm going to CTB. I don't think it will be soon given my circumstances (lack of privacy and stuff) but when one is living with strong suicidality daily, one never knows… it's so frustrating

I really don't know if I should adopt him or not :( I want something to get me feel less bad while I'm here (cat) but living between life and death makes hard making such decisions… any one has any tips to decide? or what would you do?

I love cats too! I have a cat and he's really attached to me and I'm just as attached to him. I got him a long time ago just before I got really depressed and suicidal. He probably saved my life I guess. I often struggle with the question of how he would cope if I ctb. I'm not what I would describe as, actively suicidal but it's something that occupies my mind from time to time so I know the feeling of conflict it can cause in your mind.

As I said, I love cats and I long for a world that was 90% populated by them as the dominant species! I think I would be right at home. So I would probably go for it and adopt the cat personally. Things may be uncertain right now, but you could be just the thing eachother needs?

Of course I'm biased and it's a bit more complex than that. But perhaps you could take life a day at a time together?

What kind of cat is he?

I got both of my cats during my high periods, when I wasn't as depressed as I am now.

On one hand, I am happy about that decision because they brought so much love and joy into my life. They mean everything to me.

On the other hand, perhaps not getting them would've been better because now I wouldn't have to deal with the guilt and sadness of leaving them. The thought of leaving them is absolutely heartbreaking and it's making my suicide so much more difficult to go through with.

But at least I know I'm leaving them with a person who wants to have cats and will love them.

So these are the things I would suggest to consider when making your decision: how terrible it will feel to leave them if you decide to ctb and whether you will have anyone to leave them with.

If your suicidal ideation isn't irreversible, perhaps a kitten could help you recover. Unfortunately, that didn't happen in my case.

Hope this helps.

i have trouble trusting humans. but sometimes when i see a dog being walked, i feel warmth towards the dog, as if it's easier to trust a dog than a human. i wonder if you have similar feelings about the cat you saw.

would you be willing to tell me a little bit about what the cat was like? what do you think drew you to want to adopt it? did it seem friendly/scared/etc?

I have a cat and I understand how pets can make us feel better and having my cat helps me. If you got a cat, I would consider making alternative arrangements for it, if you plan to ctb, and it will end up in a place where it is cared for.

I think you should rescue the cat. It will definitely help with getting over the loss of your cat. For the time being you will probably make each other happier. Maybe that could be a difference maker in your life? If something were to happen in your life, the cat would likely just end up back in a rescue center. Lets just say if theoretically the cat could comprehend the circumstances you are in and inevitably the circumstances it would be in, it would happily want you to adopt it even if there's a potential for it only being short term.

omg that's very cute, cats can be amazing companions :) And yes the world would be much better is they where the dominant species! I'm not sure what type of cat he is but he has a short white coat with little brown spots and green eyes. thanks for the advise! I guess I still have to think it trough a bit more

Thanks a lot for the advise <3 I'm sorry you're that situation because of your cats living pets can definitely be very hard :( I will take that into account as well…

Hi, I relate to trusting animals more than humans, at least many humans (who where supposed to care about me) have harmed me beyond repair while pets who owe me nothing have been very nice… I think what draw me to him was that he looked a little shy and no one has adopted him in a long time compared to the other cats who get adopted faster, he also is cute

He sounds like a very pretty cat with quite unusual markings! At least I don't see many like him over here in the UK! And the lovely green eyes too, he sounds very cute! I'm glad you are giving adopting him some serious thought! I'm glad you like my vision of a cat dominated world :-) The more cats we have the closer we get, so we can all do our bit to make it come true! :-) Have you ever seen the classic British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf? One of the characters in there is a highly evolved cat, he looks basically human but he's so funny and stereotypically cat like in his personality. He's like an odd mix of James Brown and Prince.
Here's a YouTube link to red dwarfs cat if you are curious...

Don't adopt if you can't commit. Simple as that.
