last year, it got so bad that I remember waking up unable to breathe very well. Then I coughed up a bunch of green phlegm and it was a bit better.

Every year on the news there's talk of young 20-somethings dying from it despite being healthy. In that case, it shouldn't be that hard to be in the next yearly batch of dead people.

Unless you're 95, a baby, or immunocompromised you're highly unlikely to die from it unless you're purposely not drinking fluids etc. There has to be an easier way. lol.

Your immune system will fight it off in all probability. Most strains aren't that fatal in people who aren't already immunocompromised and who don't already have serious respiratory problems. Most people who die from the flu actually end up dying from pneumonia or other respiratory problems secondary to the flu or septic shock or something. The 'fatal' strains are thought to maybe trigger a huge and excessive immune response through tissue damage.

This is essentially dying from starvation/exhaustion/dehydration/etc. but with the flu in a normal person.

Start chain smoking (let the smoke sit in for as long as you can) . Don't drink any water, eat little food. Under no circumstances should you take medicine.

If I walk around in the cold at night, will I get pneumonia? I read an article that said pneumonia is an old person's best friend due to it being a fairly gentle exit

I don't think it's a gentle exit. I've seen young people with pneumonia. It wasn't nice at all.

Now I understand why people went to war so much in the old days. Someone has an infected tooth and decides to kill some guy he doesn't like. BOOM. war. Dying in battle to insure an early death.

Nah to both. I've had pneumonia and it's miserable. If you're not elderly, you will be miserable too. The fever is terrible, the piercing chest pains, the forceful coughs, the chills when you're not burning. I don't know why people say that about old people because it's still pretty nasty (guess there are worse things?); they do commonly get delirious, and they have weakened immune responses already - a lot of the nasty symptoms of pneumonia, like the coughing, are the body's attempts to make itself better by getting all that shit out of your lungs, and old people can't even do that properly. So they present with fewer symptoms and have less of a horrible struggle supposedly.

And pneumonia is caused by an infection in your respiratory system. You won't get it just from being cold.

Some post-WWII stuff I've read talks about how some people who probably wouldn't cope in a normal society seemed to function well in war. Not like actual documentary stuff, just novels from the time.

To add on to what others said, I would say if there was a way to weaken your immune system (I assume that in a normal human body it is quite strong) to the point where a minor infection would be very fatal and then avoid any medical treatment for it. As for the latter part, I believe that would require an advanced directive, DNR (Do Nor Resuscitate) order, or something so that medical professionals will not try to rescue you from dying.
