  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

Would people still attempt suicide, and if so, would the methods change? Would we see more violent attempts, or would people try to pick methods that leave them with less lasting damage?

Do you think the global rate of suicide attempts would go up or down with this knowledge? Would society view suicide differently? Would views of this website change?

I think society would view suicide deaths as less taboo because they we're going to die on that day either way there was no chance. While I think people who attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts would be viewed worse by society like they would trivialize it. I think suicide attempts would lower but also more violent methods while some not as to avoid disability. I could see a rise in self harm. As for this site I think more people would find it a helpful community to come to and that it would get less scrutiny by media while also I think that it be more stigmatizing towards members. Just in general more risky behaviour and more injury maybe more criminal behaviour too. Also I bet conspiracy theories of people dying before their date would be prevalent. I could see someone try to figure out how to know when others die and use this on suicidal individuals to see if they are really at risk. Maybe before they are able to do that they add on the suicide assessment and ask you to disclose your death date.

I have no idea if any of that was remotely understandable or able to start a discussion I haven't slept and I can't tell. I feel confused and nodding off. Maybe I should just asked: if you were in this situation would your suicide plans change why or why not? (Keep in mind that everyone knows their own date and that date is not disclosed and cannot change to your knowledge at least)

If I knew I might die in a year or so, I'd still try to kill myself before then, because why should I go through all this crap for another year and suffer?

I think I know what you mean? I think the world would be a better place. People who are sick of it would have a date to focus on for relief. No one would be able to pretend like they're never going to die. Financial planning would be a whole lot easier. People would know when to wind things down and get out of the way.

I assume you mean knowing the date you are 'supposed' to die, not the date you will definitely die. It would be pretty cool to know the date you'll definitely die. Imagine it changing based on what you're doing, for example getting an illness and seeing that your date changed from 50 years from now to a few months from now. Also imagine starting to make suicide plans for a specific date and seeing your death date change to the date you planned, at least you'd know for sure that you're going to be successful.

It would drastically change people's plans. For example, people who ctb due to financial reasons. They would just toss their hands up in the air and go crazy. Spend everything they have, Max out their credit cards, take loans. Go gamble in Vegas. Do coke, etc.

This is just one example, but you get the drift.

Plot twist: someone uses this power to create a paradox and causes the fabric of the universe to unravel. It's the final CTB method ever posted. It gets two likes and a 😲

It would help to know the manner of death too and, how long we'd be suffering for prior but- I think it would change a lot. Our governments would hate it though- I imagine. Surely- we'd be more out for ourselves from the start. If you knew you were going to die at 66 after 6 months suffering, would you still work till age 65?

I think it would depend a lot on the manner/ peacefulness of death and the person's quality of life. If I knew I'd be dead next year and die peacefully, I probably wouldn't bother with suicide. If it was painfully though, I'd likely spare myself that.

Hopefully, people would be more accepting of suicide though, if they knew in advance that their death and the deaths of their loved ones would be prolongued and painful.

I think the manner of suicide would be more peaceful though. With all that notice, we'd have the time to research and source what we needed in time.

A more controversial question: If would-be parents were told their child's fate, would they still have them? Your boy will drown aged 21. Your daughter will be murdered aged 30. Your child will live to ripe old age but then, die slowly of cancer.

Would they focus on the pain or, would they still think life was worthwhile? Would they have a child knowing it would also find out it's own fate and that its parents subjected them to it? Would there be less loyalty to parents if we knew that they knew we would contract leukemia in our twenties say?

Seeing as I have antinatalist views, I tend to wonder if parents think about that in general. What could I possibly be passing on to my child? What kind of environmet will they grow up in? Will they be safe? Can I even protect them? When will they die? How will they die? Is all of this worth the risk for them? It truly puzzles me why so many come out with the answer: yes, it will be worth it for them. But then, maybe it is worth it for the majority. I don't know.

I guess it would depend on the date, for how long I would have to endure the current circumstances if I can't change anything. But if everyone knew their dates, in my mind people would want to get things done before then and the dynamics around us would change. People in general will have a different outlook on the remainder of time, on what is important or not, what is valued or not. I would hope that society will change for the better.

Honestly one of the first thoughts I had about this is how much I dread this going public.
Instead of how it would affect us, I thought of how the world having this knoledge of us would change all about how we are treated.
The ways any government handles suicide would fully re-assemble, and even socially any attempts that get out will now be accompanied with a very important and relevant piece of information that will simply be difficult not to ask for for some (not something I'd feel like dealing with).
I think that it would affect all of us diffirently, that type of cold, conclusive information... but in any case, if this ever happens, I just hope that the world and that nobody else ever finds out.
