Six months ago, I rescued a starving kitten from my backyard. Since then, we've been inseparable. She follows me around my house 99% of the time (even if it's annoying and I'm constantly changing rooms), and she'll cry when I shut the bathroom door. It's truly something I've never seen before in a cat, and I've had several other cats throughout the years.

But, because of her dependency on me, I truly love her, and it's difficult for me to fathom her existence without me. I don't love anyone else, and it isn't very hard for me to say goodbye to my human family, but every time I try to think of saying goodbye to my cat, I just breakdown, and I don't want to leave her. I even have a second cat at my dad's house, but she's extremely independent, and she won't miss me too much lol.

But this cat, apparently she acts like a completely different cat when I come home from school, as she turns extremely giddy and bouncy. I doubt she'll ever have another bond with anyone that is as strong as mine, so it pains me for her quality of life to decrease because of me.

Does anyone have advice for how to get over this?

Hola Pwincess
No quiero dejarlos desamparados.

You sound a sweet caring person. My advice is trust your instincts. She sounds like she'll be lost without you.

Unfortunately, I can't give you advice since my 5 babies are my only real reason to stay. I hope you figure out your situation and it all works out whichever way is best.

But you guys, I also don't want to live another 15 years, just waiting for her to die so that I can >.< it's truly a difficult position indeed. I almost wish someone else would have saved her back then, so that I would have no qualms leaving this world anymore.

EDIT: It's particularly worse because I have my SN ready to go, and I was thinking of ctb'ing as soon as tomorrow.

I completely understand that, it's a long time. My youngest is 9 months, so I will have a long road ahead of me if I don't rehome them (which I don't know if I have the strength to do, they're either rescues or been around since birth/baby). It's a very big decision that will definitely require a lot of reflection. Ultimately, only you will know what is best for that little girl of yours. I know you wanted to potentially ctb soon, but please be sure to think about this much as you can tolerate before making the decision.

You appear like somebody that could work well with animals, once schools over why don't you go down that avenue. I know it's different in different countries. It's worth a try.

Six months ago that little kitten happened to be found in your backyard, not next doors, nor one across the road yours. Now have a think a second, if she was intended to find home with someone else, how come she ended up where you found her. I believe she came to you for a reason, she needed love and she knew you did also. Animals are amazing they are so knowing and have perceptions that we dont give them credit for. You only have to see how she reacts when you come home from school how excited she is to be with you.

I know you are desperate to go from this life and dont wish to wait any longer, yet you have this loving cat who loves you dearly and cant wait to see you every day, as you do her. You have something in your very hard life right now, that is a comfort and joy to you. You say you breakdown when you think of saying goodbye to her and dont want to leave her. Maybe its true, she came along to keep you going, give you strength. However low we are and however hideous life gets, as long as there is one small glimmer somewhere, I feel we should hold onto it. You are lucky to have such an incredible bond with her, she chose to find you, somehow she was guided to your back yard and not your neighbours. Think of if you hadn't taken her in and where she might've gone to, not everyone is so caring towards animals and some soon get tired of them, but you, you love her, that to me is amazing. Make no rash or quick decisions about leaving, I am sure you will find the right answer and I am sure she will be part of that.

If you CTB, will the cat still have a good home to live in, where she will have food and shelter and be treated reasonably well ?

If so then I think you could still CTB if you wished to... (although of course that's something you need to think very carefully about.....)

Of course I understand the sadness, however nobody is spared loss in this life, and that includes animals, so you don't have to take it on as personal guilt, since it's beyond your power and control....

Otherwise, please see this post :

I know exactly what you mean - but there she is and here you are, asking things you already know, probably because none of them feel right to you. You can wean her off your company by leaving her with someone else a few days at a time. You can take her to your father's house as a companion for your other cat, and just not worry about how long it takes her to be giddy with happiness when someone else comes home. You can surrender her to a no-kill shelter, where they'll find a foster for her if the shelter situation is too hard on her. Cats are capable. She'll be okay.

You know all that, but it doesn't feel right because you love each other.

I do wonder how many turtles you need to own before people call you a crazy turtle lady? 10-60 I reckon.

Does anyone have advice for how to get over this?

I think living for a cat is as good a reason as any I can think of right now, so maybe you don't need to get over it? She might go downhill without you, cats can get depression.

Do you think then she'd be turtley enough for the turtle club?

Also, I agree with @chris8000. Cats can get very depressed once they've bonded with a human. :/
