I purchased some in 2019 and it is sealed and I haven't opened it. I am worried it has gone bad and started to clump. Is there a way I can pulverize it with my hands or something? I am worried a spice grinder would be overkill.

Thank you.

I think once it's clumping it's turning into nitrate but as long as it still is a white/pale yellow with few clumps it's good to go.

Pph says the shelf life of SN is almost infinite if sealed and stored correctly.

But it's sealed. I haven't opened it.

Oh? I really hope this is the case.

So long as you've kept it in a dry, dark, temperature controlled area and assuming it's properly sealed you should be fine, then. I'm unsure what you mean by the pulverizing it though

Like grinding it.

So that it dissolves quickly in the limited water.
I don't think that would be necessary I haven't heard of anyone doing it. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to do before mixing it in? But I mean, it's it's clumping it's likely it's not as pure already anyways .. it should be relatively separated grains like normal table salt from what I understand

But it's 99.9 percent pure and doesn't have any clumping agents.

As far as I know it shouldn't be clumping heavily .. havent heard of clumping unless it's degrading into nitrate. Correct me if I'm wrong though

According to the PPeH, the shelf life of properly stored salt is almost infinite. Your SN might be clumpy due to lack of anti-caking agent. Since it's sealed and unopened, it should be fine as long as it was stored properly, however, I'd still advise you to test your SN prior to CTB just to be sure.

don't open the package unless you're going to use it very soon. leave the package sealed. NANO2 reacts with oxygen, you don't want that to happen.

if you want to make sure that it's still good, you can do the blood test. put SN in contact with real blood; if the blood changes its color to dark brown, then the SN is still good and working, no matter how many years have passed since you bought it.
no, "blood" from steak or meat cannot be used, as steak doesn't actually have blood in it as some people think (that juice on steak is just water combined with a protein called myogoblin). has to be real blood.

there's also another form of test that I'm aware, it's probably called aquarium test, but I don't like it, as it's more complicated than the blood test; if you're interested you can search "aquarium test" on the forum.

I guess the blood then needs to be added to a small amount of already diluted SN to see if it's good or not, right?
In this case (sn purchased not recently) I think the test needs to be done only if she/he intends to use it soon, am I wrong?

Oh yeah @throwaway_2620 was telling me about that. I'm wondering how long it will last if opened worst case scenario.

I think just the powder and yeah I got it in 2019.

I think it's probably just the pure powder that needs to touch the blood for the blood test, @TheWood. probably no water. as with everything though, you gotta double or triple check the informations before doing anything. safety first.

there's obviously no way to test SN without opening the package. but it's really not recommended to open the package. nitrite reacts with oxygen and turns into nitrate. just let the package sealed, closed in a dry and cool place wrapped in extra plastic bags with knots, until the time comes to use it. protect it at all costs.
