My mom is expected to die of cancer this summer, which was my open window. How long after she passes would be a generally acceptable amount of time for me to CTB? We are all adults, so no children are involved. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear. There is no acceptable time. My husband died of cancer 9 weeks ago. If I had SN then, I would have done it right away. Then there was a double funeral. And once sorrow.

Personally I'd wait 3-6 months after her passing.

I don't think there are any social norms around this really. Obviously suicide is generally disapproved of, but I wouldn't say it's somehow more forbidden within a certain timeframe of an existing bereavement. It's more about you considering the same factors you might weigh up in general, such as how your suicide might affect others you care about. If you think they would be particularly vulnerable after your mother's death, you may choose to wait for an arbitrary period. But also recognise that there is almost never an 'ideal' time for suicide, and if you were to wait for one to occur you'd probably die of old age!

I'm also struggling with this. As others have said I don't think its ever really a good time. The longer you wait the harder it may be on you. And if you do it before your mother dies yes it will be hard on your family, but .. i just hope that you're able to do what you think is best at the end of the day. Take care friend.

I don't think it would be any worse if you did it the same day compared with a year later. I think it's a nice gesture that you're waiting for her to pass so she doesn't have to cope with it, but when she passes, you have a green light.

There are no rules, you follow you heart, you'll understand when you're ready. And please, spend this time with your mother.

My uncle died last year, I remember how sad my grandma was when they told her, how she hit her face, and begged to die, she was in panic attack for hours.
I never forget that, it won't prevent me to kill myself but I feel such a crappy grandson to the woman that raised me.
I love her so much but I'll have to go

Depends how many others in your family. If it's just you two then no point waiting but if you other people/things to sort out then after than.
