I've done a fair bit of research on this but I still have some questions. I know that (at least in the US) the police are required to investigate suicides to make sure there was no foul play or that anyone else was involved. I know that they might take some of my things and they'll definitely question my parents. I think it should be very obvious that my suicide was my choice and mine alone (I have a documented history of depression, my parents will both attest that I've mentioned my intent to kill myself, and I'm going to leave a detailed note explaining why) but I haven't been able to find out conclusively if all of that will be enough.

If they're going to investigate further, they're definitely going to want my phone and computer. Prior to catching the bus I plan to wipe all data from both of them. However, I know that there are ways to recover data even after it has been deleted. Do you think they would go that far? Like I said, it should be obvious that I killed myself as a result of years of depression; simple, case closed. But if you think they might try to retrieve the deleted data I'd like to know so I can destroy my devices instead of just wiping them.

It's not that I'm involved in anything illegal, I just hate people snooping through my stuff. I plan to destroy all of my physical notebooks as well.

i think it very much depends on the circumstances; so, just spit balling a few things:
- what was the method; a hanging seems like it'd be a bit more open and shut. a drug o/d might add questions of source, etc.
- is a parent or someone close pushing them to investigate further for some reason?
- is it big city or small town? a bigger city is as likely to give a suicide a second look as much as a stolen purse. but then a small town may just not have the same resources to spare to look into it

all of these are just guesses/opinions, but i really don't think you have anything to worry about if you haven't given them a reason to suspect there has been a significant crime committed that's worth investigating.

if you're still concerned then simply remove your hard drive and destroy it prior to ctb.

Thank you for your input. The method will most likely be partial hanging in my garage. I'd love to get my hands on Nembutal or a medical grade tourniquet but since I don't live independently that's highly unlikely. I doubt that my parents would push for further investigation as they've known of my suicidal thoughts since I was 14, but it's also possible that they might go into denial and desperately search for something else to blame it on. They're always trying to blame my depression on unrelated things.

I do live in a pretty small, rural town. A couple years ago a highschool kid committed suicide and it really seemed to shock the whole community for quite some time. That being said, I'm a nobody who hasn't left my room much for the past four years and I hardly know anyone, so people might not even notice. My family doesn't know many people in the community either.

They shouldn't investigate for long unless you give them reason too.(they will probably close it that night) For instance, if you have seemed really happy have started relationships that are going great according to the other person-they will be more likely to investigate than if you have been acted depressed and isolating yourself.
