I currently have a .22 revolver with me that I might use in the future, depending on if I cannot get partial suspension to work right. My biggest concern is the effectiveness of the method and how messy it would be once it is finished. Would it be better if I were to just work on partial rather than a gun?

Gun shots are messy, and, if done wrong can leave you with pretty horrific injuries and brain damage. Having attended gun shots that have been successful and not successful while working as a paramedic, I can tell you it's not pretty for those who find you.

To add on the previous, when I was in a nursing program, the nurse asked (paraphrased) "how many suicides by guns do you think had two shots minutes apart?" Apparently if you miss, you can not only survive, but be able to walk. And... let's just say the second shot was to finish the job after a brief walk. And those scenes are.... yeah...

My grandparents neighbor actually killed himself by shooting himself in the head, twice, with a noticeable delay in between. All the neighbors thought the wife did it, the police and the medical people were like 'nope, it happens' not even a hesitation (it was a retirement community, apparently very common).

Just saying things I was told, and from someone I met once I believe (but grandparents definitely did meet).

A 22 caliber could mean failure to die.

While a .22 can kill a human, it isn't as reliable as say, a 9mm HP (hollow point), 00 buckshot, .45 ACP, .357 Magnum, etc. Also, if you are aiming at the side of the head, you would need to still hit the brainstem (behind your ear and near the center of the head) to ensure absolute success. I wouldn't rely on a .22 if you have other choices. Personally, I'd go for 9mm at least, or a revolver chambered in .357 magnum, or .38 special.
