I live in a 2 story apartment and want to use the CO method. I don't have access to a car and am unable to use a tent. I want to do it in my bathroom but the back wall is shared with the apartment behind me. So how can I keep the carbon monoxide from leaking into my neighbor's apartment? I also want to make sure it doesn't pass thru any of the bathroom walls...just to be safe. I don't want to hurt anyone else.

Is there a door or something? Unless I'm tragically mistaken, the gas shouldn't just go through the walls, given that there aren't any cracks. I understand your worry, though. Can always reinforce your tent enough so it doesn't even make it out to your bathroom.

Unfortunately I'm not using a tent. It's a small bathroom and one wouldn't fit. I read an article that CO can pass thru walls so it worried me.

Oops! Sorry I'm illiterate I guess. Read too fast, bad comprehension, blah. By no means an expert answer, but maybe taping up tarping that covers the shared wall? Someone one here that was using a tent for CO used some special weather tape to cover it up. Maybe mimic that kinda thing on a huge scale?

I just had an idea. I could rent a U Haul truck and lay in the back with a grill. It would be a 10 ft truck. Is that too big of a space? Does anyone see how this might not work? Here's a picture of the truck I could rent.

  • Inside dimensions: 9'11" x 6'4" x 6'2" (LxWxH)

Thats a great idea! But I can't help ya there. Though I'd guess you'd need a Lot more time and coal for a bigger space.

There are news reports where people have lit grills in their cars or trucks you might want to look into that..

Think of it like thin water, if your apartment was full to the ceiling with water I'd say your neighbors wouldn't stay totally dry, and CO is much thinner than water so some would probably leak through.

Have you considered any other methods? In my opinion CO is peaceful but can endanger others, N is good but a bit expensive, SN is fairly cheap if you can get hold of the right antiemetics, and inert gas is cheap, peaceful and low risk but hard to set up.

If you can rent this truck - so you have enough space for a small tent too..

Did you read my post about using a U Haul? I'm wondering if that would work.

Sometimes you can buy these really large plastic bags

Good idea. I just thought by using the truck I wouldn't have to bother with a tent. Something to think about though...

Ah no I didn't see it, yeah that could work. A van would work just as well I'd say.

Good idea. I just thought there were more ways for the CO to escape in a car or van (doors, windows, vents, etc.) Plus this way you aren't visible to anyone. I just have to figure out a secluded place to park it.

You want a tent to keep CO concentrated in much smaller space and keep it there.
There are really cheap 1 person tents. Do you have Decathlon shops where you live?

It does work which is why i asked you to look into news reports if youre having second thoughts abt doing it in a vehicle..

I've never heard of that store. But thanks for explaining the idea behind using a tent. I just feared knocking into the grill because sometimes you have convulsions with CO poisoning.

No gas can pass through a wall. Its all baloney in that article posted above to prevent people from doing it(I suppose).
Still if you want, buy a can of white oil paint(for walls) or plastic paint(for walls). Not distemper. Paint the bathroom walls, it will only take a few hours. There is really no need to do this but still if you want you can.
To seal everything use those thick plastic black garbage bags and waterproof tape.

This method works even if there is a little leakage. Its not something big to fret about. And a little leakage is not going to harm anyone. The ppm count in a given volume of air is relevant not whether the gas is leaking or not. If a litre or two of CO is filled in a normal sized living room, the people may experience headache but nothing more than that. If the person attempting is very close to the source of CO, he will not survive even if there is some leakage.

Nitrogen and helium won't work if there is even a very small leakage and some ordinary air is coming in. But CO will work even if there is leakage and even if some amount of fresh air is coming in. Because when you inhale both fresh air and CO, alveolar sacks absorb CO and not dioxygen for the complex that CO forms with haemoglobin is 300 times more stable than the one of oxygen and haemoglobin. So you shouldn't worry about little leakages. It will work fine as long as you are very close to the source and are there for a long time and the amount of CO being released from the source is plenty.

Well, here's what Sylvia Plath did, according to Wikipedia (also suggest you find a different method that doesn't put other people at risk):

"They found Plath dead of carbon monoxide poisoning with her head in the oven, having sealed the rooms between her and her sleeping children with tape, towels and cloths. At approximately 4:30 am, Plath had placed her head in the oven, with the gas turned on. She was 30 years old."

The only thing I have to figure out is where I could park it without attracting attention or being disturbed (like from the police)

Unfortunately no. The only wooded areas are the Metro Parks and the police patrol those areas pretty frequently. But that's a good though.

Really? I've seen a couple of articles saying the same thing...I guess you can't believe everything you read. Thanks for the suggestions.
