Has anyone thought about this in case you fail so nobody knows?

Damn, yes they are not good. I remember being stood in a police station at 13 with bright red ligature marks around my neck from a failed attempt.

I imagine some padding might help, but you're putting a lot of pressure on your neck so I am not sure you can completely get rid of them and still apply enough pressure to the correct places. They would fade in time though, so if you failed then hopefully by the morning they would be faded/fading and easier to explain away. If you did it on a Friday night too you could hide away all weekend until they were gone?

Was it partial or full suspension? What made it a failure?

i found a thick t-shirt wrapped around my neck relieved some of the pain from the rope but i guess you could use any type of cloth. just make sure you tie whatever your using tight around the neck for extra blood flow cut off

Oh I was a kid so the attempt was genuine but ill advised. I used one of those plastic ties which once they are secured don't easily undo and thought that securing that tight around my windpipe would kill me. I nearly passed out in a supermarket toilet but was interrupted by a security guard as it was closing (very poor planning on my part, my adult self wouldn't make such a rookie mistake!) so then had to try and get the tie off my neck so I could exit the shopping mall, then my parents had realised I had run away so contacted the police who phoned me and managed to get me to the local police station. All in all a weak attempt, but the first time my parents knew I was serious.
