How common is rape in prisons?

I think it is more common in US prisons than in German prisons.

The first time I became aware of this phenomenon was watching The Boondocks. I still wonder a little bit why heterosexual man do that. Isn't it a little bit disgusting? Another time I saw it was watching the very good movie American History X. It is used as a weapon. I understand that. And it is about power.
