I've heard things like prison rape are fairly uncommon but violence isn't. The thing I fear the most is having boiling sugar water "napalm" thrown in your face.

I suffer from anxiety thinking I'm going to be picked up on some anti-free-speech/expression charges because I'm so pro-choice on suicide. For the past year I've also been researching what prison is like just in case I can't commit suicide first. Have you read that in the US most prison officials oppose inmate suicide NOT on the grounds that they're responsible for inmates but instead because they feel suicide would allow inmates--who should be suffering to pay for their deeds--to get off too easily?!! You cannot make crap like that up. THAT is what our culture considers justice: stop people from committing suicide so those people can suffer longer. :meh:

I was in a prison. but only for a short time (as a part of my destroyed life, just for a fine). The worst thing for me was boredom. Being alone with my thoughts felt like torture. I had nothing in my cell, no television - no radio, only my fucked up mind and four white walls. Every second in there I thought about hanging myself up on the prison bars.

Anyway...I had no problems with anyone in there. The only one with problems was a sex offender. They told me not to change a word with him or it would be my turn.

Really? Where were you, please?
I've only been to jail & witnessed all major of violence, witnessed because I stayed in my cell 99% of the time & passed off my food to whomever. This was in NJ. All relatives that had long sentences experienced much worse. Where are these calm jails prisons located.

You mean the prison in the show seems like a college dorm?

I've seen few minutes on YouTube now and the prison where I was was a lot uglier and older. It used to be a Jewish prison back in hitler's times and there hasn't been any renovation since, depressing atmosphere inside. But the real problem are the other prisoners, like in your case.

I want to know this, too. I keep hearing conflicting accounts of US prisons (other than the fact that we have the largest percent of our population locked up). Aren't there low security prisons for mostly non-violent "white collar" criminals? Maybe they're the low-violence ones partly because their inmates don't want to get sent to the dangerous high(er) security prisons?

It doesnt matter where you are you can always count on humans to find creative ways to bring the worst kind of suffering to other people

U.S prisons are shit holes because they literally profit off of them. There is a reason they are so keen on charging and locking up people for possession of pot and other very minor criminal offenses. When somebody has money to make, they will ruin the system until it benefits them and their pockets with no disregard for how it will affect the system, community or those involved.

There are many stories and leaked documents about prisons and the police working together for the sake of profit, even the government has been in on it. It's kind of sad to see the "land of the free" in such a pitiful state for what their founders believed in and worked so hard to achieve. I truly feel sad for the rights that are being violated there, and it's definitely expanding into other countries like here in Canada.

This is very true and while I never been in trouble with the law, this is even more reason for people to stay very clean in the eyes of the law. Life for me is already difficult enough so prison and legal issues would be beyond too much for me to handle.

I agree. But I wish it were as simple as staying clean in the eyes of the law. You might need the law's (police...) help--but get abused instead. And if you're the wrong type of human being, the chance the law can attack you unjustly may be higher. The law in the US is gravely broken but nothing is being done about it largely because enough people simply haven't had to interact with the law. By the time many of them do, it's too late.

I spent a year in a UK prison which really isn't all that bad. A lot of the inmates enjoy their time inside. Might sound stupid but they're well fed, warm and in most cases secure, there are work placements you apply for to try and get a good fit,use of gym facilities, chaplaincy services and even colour TV/PSconsoles in cells. Daytimes are only spent locked behind doors as a punishment. Obviously there are certain inmates that might find things difficult, such as those with charges of harm against children or those known to be overfamiliar with police/officers. But only those who choose to get involved with trouble, find themselves in trouble.
OTOH,what I've seen of the US prison system is very frightening. But I've only seen documentaries made for US TV,which is inevitably going to use scare tactics and show the worst of the worst. The one thing that can't be denied about US law though,is the ridiculously long sentences handed out as if that's really solving any problem at all.

I feel like I'd personally prefer my own cell to having three violent cellmates and being forced to do hard labor for like $1 an hour

I'm not trying to like disagree with you exactly as I'm just puzzled about a lot of the current debates about prison, and personally would want to have access to solitary instead of getting my ass kicked and worse all day, on top of having to do hard labor in many instances

I've been in Solitary Confinement for a stent. Let me tell you that incarceration is HELL. I was tough enough to hold my own. But I'd still prefer working a dead end job to it anyday!

But I'd imagine solitary confinement is better than being in the general population?

Also what country were you in/what were the details of that? You can PM me if you want, and you also obviously don't have to share anything at all

I am from Norway. Prisons here are humane and ok. I sometimes contemplates serving a prison sentence as an alternative to suicide, or if I fail at killing myself. The conditions are good and every prisoner get their own cell with tv, and the food is actually great! The only problem with doing time, as I see it, is that you have to mix with other prisoners.

And I am happy to say that the police in Norway is great! I feel that just any trigger happy idiot can be a policeman in USA, but in Norway it is very difficult to become police. In my country the police is respected and liked.

The only thing I don't like about the Norwegian justice system is the very short sentences they hand out. If you kill somebody you only get like 10 years in prison. You of course get extra years if the murder was premeditated or extra painful, but rarely longer than 16 to 18 years. And on top of that people don't actually serve the time given, only two-thirds of it if they behave.

Yes, there is a duty to be active. You are not allowed to just idle and do nothing. So you either have to work or study, but the work is not very hard and the education is top-notch. Many people when they leave prisons has obtained a diploma or a certificate of apprenticeship.

So from monday to friday they have work hours from about 8 to 15. The evenings and weekends is time off and they can just relax and do whatever they like.

Yeah fuck that

Also they are also making increasingly common moves for felons to be hired out of prison in America (hats off to them if they want that), but that's just going to lead to the world becoming more like prison

Also "trigger-happy" policemen are the best ones for suicide by cop

So there's no real protection from being mutilated then, great

I'm not trying to argue with someone on the internet but this is just reinforcing my hopelessness if painless suicide methods become illegal

In many Norwegian prisons the inmates have access to knifes and axes and a whole range of tools. It is possible to kill yourself if you want to, but of course it can be difficult obtaining SN:-)

P.S.: Some prisoners even have access to chain saws:wink:

I would really rather not chainsaw myself to death

Does not sound especially quick or painless
