I recommend this guy's YT to anyone interested in mental health and treatment, he has great insight as a former therapist of many years.

I am not sure how good it is for a schizophrenic patient not to take his/her medication.

Though:
There are studies in poor countries that say people who have never taken medication have a better outcome. There are some possible explanations for that. In developing countries they have another way of living. Mentally ill people are treated differently. There is often no 9 to 5 work schedule.

Another theory is: if you ever took a neuroleptic this influences the outcome a lot. If you ever start with a neuroleptic it is likely you will need one forever. There is this revolving door effect. If you stop antipsychotic medication it is very likely you will relapse. They gave me some of when I highly psychotic. I could not really agree on it.

I am rather in favor of treating schizophrenia with medication. I have met some people who did not take medication for this illness many ctb or have horrible cruel lives. The most people with schizophrenia without proper medication tend to become psychotic. Even for a long time period. This state is often very horrible for the person.

You are probably on the anti-medication side. I have met a schizophrenic woman who did not take medication and still managed her life. She had also other mental illnesses. It is not fully impossible to live without medication if you are schizophrenic. It probably depends on the person/ case to case. Though it can be quite dangerous.

Video linked does a better job of discussing this than I ever could, but based on studies, long term recovery prospects for people on antipsychotics are poor compared to those who don't use them. I'm not saying people on these meds should quit could turkey, just that we should look at the data and make our own minds up rather than unthinkingly accepting what most people and even doctors believe to be true. Sadly, I acknowledge that most people will never have access to social supports that enable a medication free life. Material conditions and treatment culture that force a heavily disadvantaged group into life long dependence on very harmful drugs due to lack of access to better alternatives is the real tragedy here.

I think this better outcome only counts if you have NEVER taken an antipsychotic. When you start one you will probably dependent on it forever. Only if you never have taken one the statistics are in favor of the no medication approach. But I am not a scientist. It is better to make a long research before that decision. And I think the opinions of professionals should at least been listened to.

A therapist who works in the psychiatry with schizophrenic patients told me especially the people who don't take antipsychotics often ctb. He wanted to convince me to take the pills. I tried to live 1,5 years without them. It barely was possible I was extremely vulnerable and even very mild stress made me paranoid. Though I am not schizophrenic but I had psychosis/paranoia.

There is a body of research indicating a link between toxoplasma gondii (a protozoan that is frequently passed from cats to humans) and schizophrenia. I realize that the etiology of schizophrenia varies greatly, but if it is pathogenic in its transmission, then it kind of stands to reason that elimination might bring relief. I have no solutions that I could resonsibly offer for this, however (sorry).

Medication,
is only "HIS/HER MEDICATION"

- IF he / she CHOOSES to take it.

Medication, is just medication. A product you can use or not.

"I am starting meds." "I am going off meds." These are both fine things that make sense to say.

"He's not on HIS meds" - implies paternalism, and that it's not really his choice to make.

The real experts on how human minds work: everyone who has one.

NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US.
