Hi, have any of you tried online therapy at some point?

Did you enjoy it?

Any recommendations?

I'm just really desperate and can't stand or afford face to face therapy.

Since the first lockdown hit over here, I've seen nearly all of my clients in online appointments and so far I haven't encountered any issues, it's just as effective in terms of results. Some people prefer a face to face appointment but I've actually found most of my clients prefer the comfort and convenience of having their sessions at home.

From a client point of view as well, I had a couple of online sessions with a psychiatrist earlier in the year in order to get my ADHD diagnosis and it was great, I actually preferred it to a face to face session as I didn't need to waste time travelling or deal with stuffy waiting rooms.

One thing I will say is to make sure you have a solid internet connection and a decent quality microphone and test it before you connect, particularly important if you're using your phone. Other than that, check out the reviews and try to have a brief initial conversation with the therapist to get a feel for the way they work and what they may be able to offer you.

Many therapists specialise in several different areas, some are experts in a particular niche. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a lottery to find a good one, but as far as the online aspect - you're not limited by travel distance so cast your net more widely, perhaps even consider therapists from different countries if they are experts (many therapists will take on international clients). Above all else, set out clearly what you ultimately want to achieve from your therapy sessions before you start looking, knowing what you expect from a therapist in advance will not only help you more readily find a therapist who specialises in what you need but it allows your initial sessions to be more focused and tailored.

If you're seriously considering doing online therapy, pay attention to location. Latency difference can be frustrating to deal with and a little bit jarring.

Mine switched to online at the beginning of lockdown. I'm not sure how I feel about it, it has good days and bad days. I can't help but sometimes feel if they are even listening, there's the occasional connectivity issues, camera freezing, sound problems. Impersonal and awkward sometimes.

I was thinking about it, found a website, but found out that they charge.

Yes I find the email or live chat useful as you're not out your comfort zone (home) or wherever you feel as safe as possible and I can convey myself clearer than an on the spot conversation exchange. Though I believe face to face does have its benefits as you get a flow of energy and can often unravel issues hard to pinpoint when attempted directly. But for people like me that are a jittery mess in person without self medication online is a great benefit.

Mine switched to online due to this shit, I miss seeing them in person though, but it does make it easier because I don't have to spend money on a cab.

I used to have therapy over Skype when I first got diagnosed with BPD. I didn't use webcam as I didn't feel comfortable so it was voice chat only. I felt a little more on edge because I felt I couldn't talk freely in my own home, too many people around to hear etc so for me it wasn't the best. But some of you might feel more comfortable talking from your own home, having your home comforts around you etc.

I've done therapy on zoom for a long time, and it works really well for me. I prefer meeting over zoom rather than in person since I don't have to get there, and it's much more comfy at home.

I've had about four or five sessions with my therapist over the phone since the pandemic started. It's sometimes harder for me to process what she's saying though since it's easier to get distracted than it would in a face to face session.

thank you for posting this. No therapists in my area accept my insurance. I considered switching insurance but problem is I have to take a blood thinner shot every 12 hours- which my insurance gave me special approval for. Last time I attempted to change insurance the new insurance denied my blood thinner shots forcing me back into the one I have now. In order for me to move forward in a positive way for my younger son I need therapy. This may be a chance to get some. Can people share websites that have therapy? or is there just not common ones?

7cups (but they charge talking to an actual therapist, I think, but you can chat with volunteers), https://www.supportgroups.com/ - very good peer-to-peer support site, also without the actual therapists.

EDIT: Just checked, 7cups charge talking with an actual therapist 150$ a month.

thank you. I'm clueless where to begin so thats a help. I can't afford to pay a therapist as they are $300-$500 per session here. I wish therapy was an available option for anyone who chooses but its a very profit driven business here especially. Because I have insurance I cannot participate in the sliding scale fee places so I'm stuck...

7cups has some very good listeners, and you can also volunteer. That might help you take your mind off your own troubles. Unfortunately, online therapy isn't free, unless it is done by volunteers.

I might call insurance and ask them if they know of any online providers that take my insurance. My blood thinner shots cost over $2000 a month so I can't really give up my insurance.. it's so complicated

I tried betterhelp awhile back hoping I could get an at home solution to my problems since everyone praised it. Was a horrible experience and I wouldn't recommend it.

The guy used his required 2 msgs a day. One to ask how I'm feeling and the second to link a googled depression article. He never acknowledged anything I said. It was very awkward. Luckily got a refund because 200 for that was insane. Obviously just doing it for easy cash...

There seems to be more teletherapy and such with the pandemic, I think more legitimate therapists are open to that now.

thank you someone recommended that better help. I'm glad I was warned in advance. I guess I'll have to try to motivate myself to call insurance and ask about telehealth

I started in person sessions for CBT back in January with a therapist I really liked from the get go. Once COVID started in March he had to switch to video sessions and while I still really liked him as a therapist, it felt much less personal due to everything being on a screen. I'm in the US and therapists here have to be licensed in individual states, and since I moved a few months ago he was no longer able to work with me. I have been considering trying one of the online therapy apps but just feel like it isn't as effective and going to someone in person now is still difficult with the pandemic.

I tried WoeBot, it's an AI therapy app, you can get it in the app store or google play store. It helped for a while.

7cups will. Woebot only gives you options to answer questions about your mood and anxiety levels in the previous two weeks. Then it asks you to list the things you are grateful for/good things that happened today.
I wrote that I had fun on an online forum, but it prompted me to give one more example and did not accept "That's it" as an answer. So i also put listening to music.

I see. I'll definitely check out woebot, might as well. I think my stuff might be a bit heavy for 7cups then lol.

No but I did spend five years in therapy when I just needed an email address and a forum. Not something you recover from either with therapy or a forum or indeed online therapy

I tried signing up for a few of those online therapy sites, but they all rejected me, saying I needed more help than they could deal with. At least no money was wasted...

For those in the US, this is a great site for finding (more) affordable therapists that offer tele-services: https://openpathcollective.org/

I've interviewed a handful of folks I found on this website, though I did not opt to join Open Path and pursued treatment off the platform.
