What knot should I use for hanging?
Also what would be the best thing to use for a rope if not an actual rope.

I might even go buy a proper rope

Although there are warnings not to use a hangman's noose, I am finding it works well, but with only three turns rather than the more normal 6/7. My rope is jute, three strand hawser laid, about 12 - 15 mm diameter, and I find that this produces about the right compromise amount of slippage and friction. But I guess that you just have to practise and try different knots to find what works best for you and the rope you choose.

Boom hitch knot to whatever you're using to hang yourself and slipknot for the neck. When I was going to use hanging as a method, I bought a nylon rope.

From what I've read and tried, either slipknot or a loop fastened with a caribeaner for the noose. I personally like the feel of the caribeaner. Static climbing rope is a safe bet, and I like to have some soft cloth in between my neck and the rope

Is there a reason not to use a slipknot to tie the rope to something?

Unsure... I'm not a knot expert, so I just followed what the knot guides on the internet said. I prefer to use a caribeaner (metal clip) on both ends if I have the choice. Makes things very simple and I think it's a satisfying feeling with the clip

My rope has arrived. It's a polyester static rope (designed not to stretch) around 15mm diameter. I'm using a slip knot for my neck and a boom hitch knot for the support structure. I'm ordering a pull up bar that's nailed into a standard wood stud wall.

One problem... the knot doesn't tie snugly. I can see that if tension were released (e.g. during unconscious thrashing), the noose might loosen a bit. Anyone else using this rope? Maybe hemp is better?

I've been practising with a slip knot. Very easy.
