No but they do take your government ID. There are different stipulations for NRA v. non NRA ranges. You at least have to take a gun course at NRA ranges but dont need a permit. In the others you need a permit. Of course these rules vary in accordance with state gun laws.

I have seen a few CCTV vids of folks at pistol ranges, you can use their gun, that take a couple shots and quickly turn the gun to their temple. You must act without hesitation as there is someone close by monitoring.

I've thought about doing this. I think it's kind of shitty to do, though.

Why not just buy a gun? Kinda messed up to shoot yourself at someone's place of business

Edited because I'm stupid: I guess the fact you're asking about background checks implies you aren't able to legally buy a gun

Me and my dad used to go to a gun club. There was a kid that used to bike by and pay $5 to the friendly old men to use their guns and they always would give him a try. Where I am you bring your own gun, is it different where you are? Anyways I wouldn't ctb at a gun club because the law enforcement would be on their ass and someone could possibly get in trouble.

Many ranges will rent you guns

They don't allow you to rent alone. Believe me, they are fully aware of the prospect of people renting guns just to shoot themselves. It isn't anything new.

This is what I'm talking about. Short, easy to handle, costs less than $25 to build. Looks like nothing but a couple pieces of pipe, but still effective. Made one like it for SHTF. Solidly 12ga. Screenshot 20190925 233713

@Pykul that would be the "four winds" shotgun. I wouldn't trust one for ctb, personally

Cool, I figured it would be easy to make one. What do you think would be the best way to make diy ammo?

I would strongly recommend against trying to CTB with homemade ammo. Using a homemade shotgun already seems really dubious, but add DIY ammo to the mix and you have a nightmare waiting to happen. You don't want to end up as one of those people who blows half their face off and survives. If you can't get a proper gun that you can put in your mouth and hold steady as you pull the trigger, you should probably switch to a different method.

That would be expensive. Boxes of 5 shot shells are available for reasonable price.

Yeah I don't recommend doing it at a gun range in particular, mostly because the chance of succeeding (doing it quickly and without hesitation) without intervention (getting tackled/restrained) is very low, especially with lots of people around. Then adding to the fact that it would bring unnecessary trouble to the gun range owners' for suicide at their place of business. As for gun range policies, I believe most have some anti-suicide policy which means they only rent to those who have their own personal firearm (meaning that someone who has one is one who is legally able to acquire one) and/or have a friend with them before they rent it (in order to discourage suicides).

As far as homemade shotguns and ammo, I used to fancy that idea over a year ago (before I acquired my own actual firearm, 12 ga shotgun), but then realized it was better to have the real thing than to risk failure/mishap.
