Hello,

I hope you're doing/feeling better than I am tonight.

I'm having a hard enough time that I'm actually considering drastically moving up my CTB timeline (regardless of my incomplete bucket list items) to within the next couple of weeks-just gotta sort a few finances to make my departure as easy as possible on the wife.

I need some advice on my method: gun shot to the head.

My preferred method for CTB will consist of using either a 9mm or .357 to shoot myself in the head. It's more gruesome than I would like, but I figured it's most effective. I've also considered hanging myself after reading a few interesting tips on here, but I'm more likely to go for the quick trigger pull.

I'm sure gun suicide has been discussed before, so I'd appreciate a direct link as to the most effective placement, with minimal failure chance, to point and shoot. My inclination is to shoot myself under the chin, pointing up at my brain. I've heard about shooting through to the back of the head and brain stem, but with everything I know as a gun owner, I think that would be extremely difficult to do on purpose. I'm looking for more realistic advice and positioning. By shooting under my chin, the bullet should go all the way through my whole head, possible through my brain. I'd use hollow points for the 9mm. I don't have hollow point .357, but I could buy some, even though a regular .357 round should be able to effectively get the job done. I'd probably go out to a forest preserve to get it done without someone having to clean up.

What would you do? Which gun/bullet size would you choose? How would you shoot?

Thank you in advanced.

No! You'll blow out your frontal lobe, but your frontal lobe isn't what keeps you alive. You must destroy the brainstem, or you'll just end up in a vegetative state.

Either .357 or 9mm would do --especially with hollowpoints (you want HPs for either caliber). Put the muzzle against your head directly behind your ear. Keep the gun pointed level and directly side-to-side, and you'll hit the brainstem.

Look at the Wiki page on "Brainstem". It has an excellent illustration that shows if you place the muzzle behind your ear you'll get the job done.

I'm sorry things have gone sideways. I hope you find peace --either through things getting better IRL or through ctb.

From what I've heard shotguns or revolvers are your best bet. But a 9mm should do (Though, I'd recommend a 45 as far as handguns go).

The best spot I've heard of is behind the ear. I heard about a girl who did that at a gun range and died. I've also heard of the temple as a good spot but that might just be in the movies.

I've read that you need to hit the brainstem. Seems to me that this could be achieved by shooting slightly upwards through the mouth. But homestly what the hell do I know.

That's just the movies. It can work, sure; with a big enough caliber (and a .357 is the biggest of all), the hydrostatic shock will often get the job done. But you're aiming for your frontal lobe, which isn't critical to life.

I had an acquaintence who made this mistake: blew out his frontal lobe and popped his eyes out. He spent a week on life support, blind and vegetative, before the family pulled the plug and let him go.

It would be great if there was a diagram or if someone could make a diagram on how to aim for the brainstem

This is the best advice I've heard. Makes much more sense than what I had read before, as it's perfectly doable. I'll get some Hollow Points for my .357 to ensure lethality as well.
Thanks for your comment.

I've considered buying a shotgun for this, but I'm not a fan of just exploding away my whole face. Completely irrational since when I'm dead, who cares?, but still.
Behind the ear sounds best to me. Temple sounds super risky.
Thanks for your input.

NEVER EVER aim under the chin! This causes the most survival rates - even with 12 gauge shotguns. You want to make sure the bullet has the shortest travel distance from barrel to brain. Aim at the roof of your mouth. The central part of the brain is what you want to destroy. If you have a powerful handgun, like a Smith and Wesson revolver, you could aim at the back of your head (right undernethe the skull) and destroy your brainstem. You can live with a large part of your frontal lobe missing.

Speaking of 12 gauges - that would personally be the only firearm id use. My bullet of choice would be PDX1 defender ammo or 00 buckshot.

CTB by firearm is not something you wanna fuck up.

.357 packs more power ( 9 mm does the trick though ) point the gun point blank either just behind the ear slightly pointed to the back of the head or through the ear slightly pointed the same this I would choose or in the mouth approx pointed 15 degrees upwards whatever you decide good luck and find freedom mate

from what ive seen on Best Gore and Death Addict with %100 percent success rate is if you shoot with the barrel through the mouth. it immediately hits the brain stem. But it takes balls to do it

Whenever I have considered using a gun then I was going to hold it at the base of my neck aiming upwards, hoping to hit the brain stem, but definitely hoping to sever the spinal cord so that even if the damage to the brain wasn't sufficient then no signals can get from my brain to my lungs and heart, so I'm dead anyway.

However, that is just conjecture on my end.

I've considered buying a shotgun for this, but...
Shotguns are powerful, but they're unweildy. Having pointed any number of guns at my head, including a short-barrelled (18.5") shotgun, I've found it surprisingly difficult to get a shotgun pointed in the right direction and steady enough for me to have been able to take a deep breath and pull the trigger --and even then, the trigger is inconveniently far away. Is it possible? Of course. But is it convenient? No.

If I were to go out and buy a gun specifically to ctb, I would find a used (cheap) snub-nosed .357 revolver with a traditional exposed hammer.
• The .357 round is the most powerful common handgun round and easily available, and will almost certainly do the job; it has enough power that you don't need high precision.
• The short barrel/snub-nose makes the gun very easy to lift and to aim precisely and with confidence.
• It being a small gun, the trigger is easily reached and manipulated; it does not demand you stretch, as with a shotgun.
• The exposed hammer means you can use it as a single-action: you can cock it, and then pull the trigger, which makes for a very light trigger pull and an easy shot, where if it is a double-action only gun (pulling the trigger both lifts the hammer and releases it) the trigger pull is much heavier, and it's easy for the gun to shift off target.
• Revolvers are mechanically simpler and far less prone to jamming than a semi-automatic.
• Revolvers are also not sexy: they are commonly used in media-adored mass shootings, they don't often appear in modern movies as the Hero's Sword, so buying one as a home defense gun to keep in the bedside table attracts negligible notice.

Just my two cents.

Turns out I'll be holding off a little while, but this will certainly be my method. Thank you, everyone, for the advice.

You want to destroy the brain stem. Also might I suggest suicide in a forest away from the rest of the world, particularly at night, if you don't hit the brain stem, then you'll bleed out before anyone finds you. Go for the brain stem.
