Discussion Green light given with Pegasos Switzerland - feeling emotional

So today I have been given the green light with Pegasos and can set my VAD date when I'm ready.

Feeling extremely emotional as I do not actually want to die in the slightest, but my conditions leave me with no option. My quality of life is none existent and I suffer ever single day. If there were some miracle cure for the conditions I have, then I would without question opt for the miracle cure. But after many years battling my conditions, multiple surgeries and countless appointments with ENT's, neurologist, counselling, medications etc. That miracle cure does not exist unfortunately.

For those suffering with incurable conditions and have the financial means to do so, then there is a real possibility of a dignified, peaceful and humane death in Switzerland.

The options over there are really between Pegasos and Dignitas. The main difference between the two is Pegasos use the intravenous method and with Dignitas you drink the medication. Intravenous is much faster, often resulting in loss of consciousness within around 30 seconds, followed by death via cardiac failure within 3-5 minutes. Consuming the medication orally can take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to lose consciousness, followed by death within 20-30 minutes, but can sometimes take longer.

The application with Pegasos is done online and you have to submit all your personal details, reasons for requesting a VAD, family background and medical records. The documents are then reviewed by the Pegasos team and a Swiss doctor. Finding out if you're eligible takes between 8-12 weeks, which is stressful waiting to know if you've been accepted. But they are busy and working hard to help, so patience is a must.

Very glad to hear about your approval! It must be a relief to know that you have the option to choose your own exit on (mostly) your own terms! If you don't mind, what kind of conditions or ailments are you suffering from (don't need to answer if it may jeopardize or if you don't feel comfortable in doing so)? Anyways, I wish you peace during this interim and in the future with whatever decision you arrive at.

But considering how difficult suicide is, it's surely a huge relief.

I'm in a bit of the same situation as you... Long Covid for 4 years, I've tried everything and I would give everything to live another fifteen years... But, nothing works and my physical state is disastrous.

Could you please tell me if Pegasos was very careful about the medical side and if the psychiatrist's papers were necessary? If you have some ideas....

Do you choose the final date for when you want or is it limited to a time frame? (a few months, a few years)

Interesting. Can foreigners apply? I may apply if I can last through trying all the treatments of my conditions first, as I'm sure they don't accept anyone who tried just a few standard treatments for a year and is under 50 years old.

@Rubypie41 It feels a little out of place to say "congratulations" because I know you, like me, just want to live but you are tormented by your rare and torturous condition (s). I figured that you would be accepted and have been wondering. I know it's a relief for you but that's a hard decision to have make and incredibly difficult.

I wish this was an option that was available to me but due to family situation, it will never happen. Have you informed your family yet and if so, how are they taking it? Have you considered when you might go? How long do they give you to admit yourself after accepted?

I won't go into full details but you can read some of my older posts. In a nutshell they are unbearable and incurable relentless ear conditions that have absolutely destroyed my existence.

My family are supportive of my decision. They were not at first but after witnessing what I go through they have now come to accept my reasonings.

I'm not sure when I will go yet. If it were purely me alone then I would go tomorrow, but I need to get my finances and affairs in order first. My partner has also just had major surgery so I want to be there for her first until she is recovered and back on her feet.

They haven't given me a time limit on when to set my VAD date, they have left that up to me to let them know.

When I have contacted them, they aren't interested because my suffering is mental and therefore harder to prove/have them take notice of.

I wish I was suffering with something physical because then they would take it seriously. Sadly mental anguish doesn't seem to count. What I'd do for a terminal illness. Then I could just sell my house and pay to go to Switzerland and end it. Sorted.

So sorry for what you're going through. Mental illness is a tough one as in the mainstream is still not truly recognised as a physical illness, therefore the belief is that it can and will get better. That may be the case for some but unfortunately not for others. Yes I agree things like anxiety PTSD and generalised depression can often be overcome, but the more severe and persistent mental illnesses often cannot.

My partner's sister had schizophrenia and bipolar really badly. She spend most of her life trying various medications, counselling, psych wards and ultimately nothing helped. She died in a psych ward from a drug overdose. Unbelievably sad and for someone like her who had severe mental illness for decades, then they should also be eligible.

The problem lies with having capacity to make the decision and when someone is mentally unwell they are deemed in the eyes of the medical community as not having capacity.
