Does anyone know of a guide or have any tips regarding the effectiveness of drilling a hook in the ceiling, for one to hang from?

I always assumed such a thing would never hold a person's weight, but then I remembered there are kinksters who dangle people via bdsm rope from a hook in the ceiling.

If a ceiling hook can dangle an adult from a single anchor point for sexual purposes, then surely the same setup would work for someone looking to CTB via Full Suspension, no?

Use a stud-finder like you would on a wall. If the ceiling has popcorn, place a thin piece of cardboard between the ceiling and stud-finder to give it an even surface.

Once you find the stud, drill a small hole (smaller than the thread of the hook screw) into it. If the hook is heavy-duty enough, it should be able to support the weight of an adult human. You can obviously test its integrity beforehand. Home depot will likely have huge ones you can use for the purpose.

I'm in the UK so our building materials may be different, but since I have zero DIY skills I will take your advice and further research how to install the correct type of hook.

Also what is popcorn in this context?

Unless the hook was installed for some weird bondage shit or to hang an enormous chandelier I would just assume it can't support your weight.

Hence why I'm exploring the Weird Bondage Shit/Enormous Chandelier route. ;)

After all, one doesn't have to only use said setup for their advertised purpose. :)

Oh lucky you, then. It is this awful shit Americans spray on all their ceilings. Not one of our proudest cultural achievements, but it remains confoundingly popular, despite everyone seeming to agree is an aesthetic menace.

The main things are: a large, robust hook. And finding the studs (thick beams of wood spaced across the ceiling.) If you just screw it into the plaster on the ceiling it will fail. If the hook is thick enough and it is screwed into solid wood, it can hold a surprising amount of weight,

Edit: the studs in the ceiling are called "joists." They can sometimes also be metal instead of wood, in which case a magnet can be used to locate them instead of a stud finder. The method I described is how I hanged metal decorative objects from the ceiling in my house.

Only thing I will add is that with full suspension, some poor first responder will be tasked with cutting the person down and stuck with those memories, plus more haunting imagery than partial for whoever finds the person if that is different from the first responder. That is the only reason really that I ruled out full and still consider partial.

Doesn't have to dominate anyone's decisions under these circumstances but it is a consideration.

I mean, at this point a corpse is a corpse, and first responders are trained for these events — it's not like I'm jumping from a building or stepping in front of a train.

I'd imagine a corpse from Full and a corpse from Partial will look similar: a dead person with some leaking bodily fluid from the bowels and mouth, depending on how long the body has been left.
Both will have to be cut down, both will stink.

Plus I'm not the one who keeps euthanasia and assisted dying illegal, as well as making the less traumatic methods difficult or illegal to obtain.

When the powers that be forbid the humane, the people are left with the extreme.

With partial I think you can just loosen the noose or arrange things so that it's even less work than that, and it's a bit less ghastly but like I said...people will weigh things differently and I don't begrudge people what they choose within reason when, as you say, we can't have Nembutal etc. Just an array of crappy options really.

I must admit the "nicest" (for lack of a better term) hanging corpse I've ever seen was in that photo of that blonde girl who used Partial, sat down against a door in her room, I'll have to find the image again.

EDIT: It's the Natália Mayer Parreira picture, not sure if I'm allowed to post such a picture here.
I always was amazed at how she was able to CTB in such a manner, with such a weak-looking ligature.

Still, the first responder will just have to manage. It sucks but a corpse has to be made somehow.
