Yes, that's the downside. looks like it would take -30 to -50 degrees to be successful with any degree of certainty.

People freeze to death in much higher temperatures, I just saw a case iun the news, it is usually people who get very drunk and get lost and pass out. BUt, as you said, if rescued then there could be a lot of damage iwthout ctb.

Not freezing to death per se but I have considered walking out onto thin ice in the hope that the cold shock would kill me.

If people fall through the ice and can't get out they die pretty quickly, but it's a miserabble way to go- you would likely screm for help, unless you are trapped under the ice, and might be rescued with damage. The apin level would be excrutiating for as long as this would take, the farthest things from peaceful.

Don't think I could do it. No- I know I couldn't do it. It would be very uncomfortable until falling asleep (If I actually managed to fall asleep). Nope. I'd chicken out and seek shelter.

I was thinking about this, too. Years ago, I was out drinking with a buddy. I had a bit too much, and on our way home, I slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk. I was so drunk that I actually started to fall asleep. I felt so cozy and peaceful as I drifted off, but then my friend kept yelling at me to get up. It wasn't until he gave me a good kick that I finally got up and continued the journey home. After that incident, I often thought this would be a pain-free way to go.

All I'd have to do is go to a secluded area, maybe drive up north. Then park my car in a quiet spot, get boozed up, and fall asleep. To protect from frostbite, I'd wear thick gloves and socks. In fact, I recall reading that when you're drunk, your blood vessels dilate, releasing heat. I imagine this would make you feel warm.

I tried searching for info on hypothermia as a suicide method, but of course, Google cockblocks you on such particulars.

It was used as a senicide method in some cultures, so it was a way of getting rid of old and sick people. I guess it was easier to leave the granny to freeze than to chop her head off with an axe. Depending on someones luck it can be peaceful or not. The risk of serious harm, including fingers and toes requiring amputation, is significant. Not a viable method if someone is likely to be rescued.

I've thought about this many times. To go way out to the wilderness during a heavy snowstorm, park, then hike as far as I could get, lay down and sleep. The car would be covered quickly and it's unlikely that anyone would be out in the storm in the wilderness anyway. After hiking in the snowstorm I would probably be lost, so I couldn't back out. Might as well sleep. Never wake up.

I know what you mean. It's not my preferred method either, more like a daydream on cold winter nights.

Still, when I've been in freezing weather it's the warming up that hurts. I remember being out in -40f and my feet and hands started to numb despite my preparations to stay warm. Getting warm by the fire was what hurt as the blood rushed back. Of course, that was just a bit of numbness, not actual freezing!

I've thought about this too.. but was put off by the idea of my extremities going manky with frostbite way before I died..

The best way is to go when temperature are slightly over freezing point , you won't last the night and you will only be uncomfortable and shiver a little.

In Vancouver, Canada, a lot of people get lost overnight every year in the north shore mountains and they die from hypothermia from temperature around freezing point.

I tried this this last winter with the temp like 30 blow f and I couldn't last a minute. unbearable. plus you risk frostbite if you survive.

Its too cold and painful , your SI will kick in but in temperature around freezing point , you will slowly freeze and die , not that bad.

I've been considering this. We usually get some "Code Blue" nights here in the winter where they try and get the homeless off the streets because of the wind chill. So many of the Everest documentaries have told of how some of the climbers who freeze to death get incredibly sleepy. If I downed a bunch of tranquilizers and an anti-nausea pill, maybe it would work. I'd just have to find a place where I wouldn't be discovered. I found out recently that a homeless man in my city died this way several years ago.

For some reason I love the idea of it but at the same time I hate it. I'd love to do that outside in the cold but not in a freezer. Chances to get found 'in time' are too high. I'd rather be dead than have some long term damage.
