Hi folks,

This is my first post. Never thought I'd be in this position due to overcoming so much and being a die-hard optimist, but an act of human cruelty and a spot of bad luck has destroyed my health, physically, and I've been in emotional turmoil for about 10 months. I'm sleeping just to escape the pain. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing what bad luck can do and how things and circumstances can unravel to a point where it's almost as if someone, or something, is just being plain cruel, and all your values, ideals, and respect you worked for can be turned on their head. I'm tired of how destructive the acts of a few shitty people with no empathy can be. I also think there's such thing as too much for a person, and too little too late, etc as I'm finding out, and also things can accumulate quietly in life. I feel like I'm actually living the hell that healthier people talk about never understanding when referring to a suicidal person.

Anyway as for the forum, it's too surreal to have an opinion on. I've lurked for a few months, and some really nice and sincere people have cropped up. I found it very surreal to begin with, almost like I was being naughty looking at it. Then it felt surreal again then it felt comforting and normal and remained so. I do find it a little traumatic when every so often I see a name crossed out of a goodbye thread and think a few days later, "fucking hell that person actually died". That's assuming they actually did, which is for another thread.

My first question, is a simple one. When it comes to commiting suicide in the UK in a public place using a standard method, does the suicide get reported only where the suicide happened? For instance, if Bob was from X village in Devon and he killed himself 200 miles away in Y town woods in Birmingham, the local Y town news in Birmingham would obviously report it and mention "man named/unnamed from Devon/X village in Devon".....BUT would it be reported by his local news back in Devon? Even if it was just a smaller mention? As for National news that just appears to be pot luck.

Thanks a lot.

Not too sure on this one. I guess a big factor was if that person was reported missing by friends/family? I'm sure if local news reported on said person missing, they would also send out an update saying that the person was found in Birmingham. It's a difficult one, the local news doesn't seem to report on every suicide.

Thanks, I'd say my question is taking into account that they (deceased) were discovered/reported/family informed quickly before they could be classed as missing.

Ah I see. I would probably say no then. I would hope not anyway. Wouldn't want my face plastered over social media and people messaging my family.

Hello, I think the news would not show all of the suicide cases, otherwise BBC and other channels would talk every day about those who CTB. Your CTB should be different than any other, only then they will pay attention to that. In 2018 there were 6507 deaths by suicide in UK only so it is not likely they will write or show about you. Concerning your local news, I can't say for sure, but you can always leave a note that your death should not appear in news or any articles if that matters to you. At least hope they won't do the opposite.
And sorry life is tough for you now.
Sending you hugs

Cheers, yeah that's why I asked the question. I like the idea of making the news, maybe as some kind of way to remain alive somehow, but in reality I don't like the thought of the social media thing.

Much of whether or not it would air can depend on the type of newsday they're having. Corona seems to be keeping them busy for now, but you never know when then might need to fill 90 seconds of air time.

Welcome and sorry you are in this position.
Im no expert but im pretty sure that unless a rare method is used or something sensational happens, or your famous, it doesnt make the news full stop. Maybe because media are encouraged not to highlight it and give other people ideas. May be wrong and happy to be corrected if so.
Thanks

I think it depends what else is in the news that day.
When 2 people CTB in an Air BnB in Scotland it made the Scottish news and the local news of where one of them was from.

Welcome to he forum btw.
I'm UK too

You hear of attempts in my area (Southwest UK) and you hear of suicides, esp if the person has been missing then found deceased. I think its because its so dull down here they report anything and everything!

I'm interested in hearing more about your story if you're keen to share. Sounds like a drastic change in life outlook from "an act of human cruelty", "bad luck" and the "destructive acts of a few shitty people without empathy".

I'm not sure, I'm going to specifically ask for relatives to refuse to speak to the press in my note and delete my social media so journalists have no free information/photos to publish.

Come on you Brits, lets try to beat the 2018 record :smiling: I remember when suicidal people had a sense of humour, :smiling: anyway enough of that, I think the media are playing down suicides at the moment and not reporting them because of the recent well publicised suicide of Caroline Flacks. They will be reported if they are very young very rich or famous but then there are people who search for that kind of information and you may end up in a similar video below.

Cheers Geo

Most people go unreported, especially in more urban areas. The ones that make the headlines usually are well known in a community, or use an unusual or interesting method, hurt someone else or affect the public somehow. Or have very vocal families. If you just quietly go about your business, it's not usually newsworthy. Especially if there are bigger things happening in the world at the time.

Cheers! Doubt they'd respect that but you never know.

Thanks for the welcome. In my region/county they publish and report all suicides in detail.

Just what I was after, thanks a lot.

I'd rather not due to the nature of the site, cheers.

I've seen those videos, very sad but compelling.
