First person in the world dies in 'suicide capsule' in Switzerland.

A 64-year-old woman passed away in Switzerland on Monday using a specially designed 'suicide capsule' filled with nitrogen gas. This was the first time a person died in such a capsule. The so-called Sarco, according to its creators, provides a "quick, peaceful, and reliable death" without the need for a doctor or medication. The suicide capsule was developed and built in the Netherlands, reports Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

The woman, an American who had traveled to Switzerland specifically for this purpose, initiated the dying process herself while lying in the capsule — a chamber the size of a coffin — with the press of a button. The Sarco then filled with nitrogen gas, and within a minute, the oxygen level dropped to nearly zero.

Dr Death

The inventor, Philip Nitschke (77), an Australian doctor and physicist who has lived in the Netherlands for ten years and is also known as "Dr. Death," worked for twelve years on developing the capsule, according to *De Volkskrant*. In 1996, he became the first doctor in the world to administer a legal lethal injection to a patient. His Sarco is a controversial invention.

The capsule was placed in a remote forest location near the Swiss city of Schaffhausen for the occasion, reports say. Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world where assisted suicide is permitted under certain conditions. Every year, thousands of people, mostly from abroad, take advantage of this option.

Nitschke reportedly monitored the Swiss woman's dying process remotely via oxygen and heart rate monitors, as well as a camera inside the capsule. According to him, the euthanasia went smoothly. The woman is said to have paid only 18 Swiss francs (about 19 euros) for the process, which is the exact cost of the nitrogen gas used.

Arrest

After the woman passed away, the organization overseeing the death informed the Swiss police. According to *De Volkskrant*, Florian Willet, the director of the Swiss organization *The Last Resort*, may have been arrested as he was present during the woman's assisted suicide.

The Schaffhausen police also reportedly arrested a *Volkskrant* photographer who had been closely following the event and attempted to take photos. The reason for this arrest is unclear. The newspaper lost contact with the photographer for several hours. By Monday evening, the local police informed the paper that the photographer was being held at the police station but provided no further explanation regarding the possible arrest, as *De Volkskrant* reported. On Tuesday morning, the Swiss police only confirmed that an "operation" had taken place near Schaffhausen.

Switzerland leading the way in assisted suicide again it seems. Then I read the end where someone was arrested for being there.

*sigh*

It's so frustrating that we as a species force people who are deeply ill and/or deeply mentally unhappy alive no matter what.

Why was someone arrested in this case? Whereas other organizations like Dignitas and Pegasos do the same and nobody got arrested there? Anyone knows what is the difference in the case of Sarco/Last Resort?

I am guessing it's some kind of legal greyzone, as it's a new method. Might not have been 100% according to the book.
But I do hope this succesful test will mean it does get recognised as a new method for assisted suicide. It looks so much more cozy than a hospital room.

Why were they arrested? Didn't they do everything legally and humanly? Why is it so hard to get euthanasia, I wish the woman peace.

Honestly, does the higher ups desperately want people alive which they can control. Siphoning taxes and money from people before they go bust.

is this overall different than other euthanasia? besides the pod part. she didn't need to go through the process of asking multiple doctors for her right to die? is that it?

Sarco , nembutal, cyanide capsules, assisting in suicide should be legal for anyone at least over 18 to purchase everywhere

They arrested people in Switzerland of all places they surely would arrest everyone in the evil oppressive U.S... they are even about to ban SN in the evil U.S

They stole our right to escape extreme torture

By making nembutal etc crimes they stole our rights to escape extreme suffering

They are pure evil torturers

I really wish I had access to such, it'd bring me so much peace from the cruelty and suffering of existing, the fact that I cannot just die so peacefully just brings me so much pain as all I hope for is to never exist again.

She got to look out on a forest as she passed. How beautiful. Brave woman too I think. If she truly was the first to use it. I know they assured everyone it worked but like- that must have been theoretical until they put a living being in there.

I wonder why they arrested people. Surely there must have been paperwork to support everything.

i wish I had the opportunity to use this device. I'd gladly pay more than €19. I feel like there should be locations w/ sarcos where anyone who is 21 or older can verify their age & then simply pay to use the device.
I feel like someone who's very handy & has experience with building & constructing all sorts of projects should be able to make their own sarco (or be contracted by someone else to build one for them). I'm glad the woman got a painless death & is no longer suffering, as this was clearly their desire. I hope I can go through with my own plan sooner than later.
If I had a sarco here rn, I'd throw this phone down, preferably on a hard surface & ideally be gone in a few minutes. It would not affect anyone else except maybe my mom. She & my cats are the main reason I am still alive.

The police were able to arrest them because, according to Swiss Health Minister, the sarco does not comply with the existing legislation.

This week Switzerland's Health Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, said the way Sarco functions — that is, by filling the pod with poisonous nitrogen gas — does not comply with the existing legislation.

The main reason is that federal law requires that all products in Switzerland must be safe, and not endanger the health or life of users.

Sarco, which literally causes death, does not meet this condition, Baume-Schneider said.

There is a debate in Switzerland regarding the legality of the Sarco. The Swiss government had not previously made a statement on the matter, but on Monday, the Swiss Minister of the Interior suddenly asserted that the capsule would not comply with the regulations.

Earlier, Swiss media reported that prosecutors had warned that the use of the Sarco would be punishable for the individuals operating the capsule. They could face a prison sentence of up to five years. Organizations involved with the Sarco were said to have been informed of this.

However, Nitschke claims that he has sought advice from Swiss lawyers, who assured him that the use of the capsule would indeed be legal in Switzerland.

She was reported to have suffered from some illnesses, according to the last resort website. So there was still some medical records, I assume. What she didn't need in this case was a doctor's prescription.

Yeah but the Swiss lawyers aren't the ones going to jail. They're testing the legality of this with their potential imprisonment. It's a bold move. We'll see how it all pans out.

Well, we at least know the Sarco Pod works perfectly, R.I.P. to the 64 yr old woman---The police were not amused, don't they have better things to do?

I'd pay more too, I'd pay $1000 if it was nearby where I live--Can't imagine a cooler way to go than the Sarco Pod, it looks like the pods that they used in Space movies when they're in stasis

The news in Belgium just had a short story about this.
There were multiple reasons for an investigation.
1: Backlash to the idea from the scientific community and governments. For it being too easy to do and apparently there is a lot of debate about the effectiveness and painlessness of using an inert gas.
2: Assisted suicide, which somewhat differs from euthanasia, is legal in Switserland under very strict regulations. They don't know for sure if this fit that set of rules, which is the main reason they got arrested with suspicion of forcing or aiding someone to commit suicide etc.

The pod, no seized, and this issue will be tied up in the courts for some time.
