The fact that we feel trapped in our suffering is what makes it unbearable. The good news is that this problem is solvable, and the solution is coming sooner than we think.

Statistics prove that the vast majority of us are going to end up suffering chronically at some point in our lifetime (85-90%). Much of this is due to the fact that we are living much longer than ever before in human history. I'm sure you're asking why is this good news? While it's true that more people suffering is obviously an extremely bad thing, what this does do is force most people on Earth to realize that we are all in this together. This is not just going to affect a few of us, it's going to affect the vast majority of us.

This is why we are almost at the tipping point on the issue of medically assisted dying. Humanity is very close to realizing that we cannot continue to force people to remain trapped in their suffering for years on end.

In all developed countries, the majority of people support medically assisted dying. Only 10 to 15% of all people in these countries will end up dropping dead from natural causes. This means that the remaining 85 to 90% of us all will be experiencing some form of chronic suffering, at some point in our lives. A few people will make it all the way through happy and healthy, and then drop dead instantly in the end, but it's a very small percentage of people who will be this lucky.

Once all adults are allowed to make this decision for themselves, and have access to legal assisted dying, then people will feel far less trapped in their suffering. This will dramatically reduce anxiety and stress in people's lives, therefore REDUCING the total number of people who will resort to committing suicide. There will be much less desperation, and therefore much less need to escape it.

It's very clear that the wisest path forward is for societies around the world to immediately stop causing their citizens to feel trapped in their suffering. The current controlling policies only cause far more anxiety, far more desperation, and ultimately far more people in total committing suicide.

If societies around the world give this control back to the people who should have it, their adult citizens, then only good things will be the result. We can finally eliminate the need for risky, painful, horrific and inhumane methods of suicide, and the vast majority of people will no longer have to feel trapped and be forced to suffer, especially at the end of their life.

I wouldn't second this 100% bc the circumstances that make people suicidal are there far earlier than the feeling of being trapped bc of inaccessible methods.

If people have a healthy life and no problems a majority won't be suicidal bc they can live a good life, there is the group of people with (incurable) diseases who may wish to end their lives earlier and then there's the group of people with "genetic defects" that's can't be fixed in any case.

I'm well aware the the whole topic is far more complex but generally: people who have a good life on all levels don't become suicidal.
