My friend had to deal with this with her husband, & she'd just let her phone die. You could also maybe turn your phone off but take it with you just in case?

Yup I'd go with that. And no one in motels ask why you're taking a room, even if it's in your city. There are a million reasons why you might need to stay in a motel.

Domestic problems—JFK Jr was staying at a hotel around the corner from his home because of issues with his wife. Happens all the time and I doubt a hotel would ask anything at all...in fact they are trained to respect the privacy of their guests because all sorts of shit happens in hotels and their main goal is to limit liability while collecting money. If it's a B and B that's a different story but so long as it's a big hotel chain I would walk in, check in, and enjoy your stay.
