I just don't get this at all. I've been thinking about my dog and the day me and my ex had her put to sleep. She had gone off her food, she would only eat if I hand fed her and only a tiny bit. She stopped coming to the door when we came home, she din't want to play or go for walks. The vet did tests and we went back to collect her and get the results and were told she had cancer. The vet said she could give painkillers but in her opinion it would be kinder to put my dog to sleep because she was suffering. And that's what happened. I sat on the floor with my dog's head on my lap telling her I loved her and that she was the best dog and she wasn't going to be in pain anymore. The vet gave the injection and she was gone. There were no signs that it was painful or distressing, it was dignified. We couldn't ask her if it was what she wanted or if she would rather have painkillers and struggle on until she died naturally. We didn't want her to suffer, we wanted to be kind so we made that decision to end her life.

We can ask humans and humans can make rational decisions so why is this not allowed? Why is it kind to not let an animal suffer but to insist that humans do?

Same, this absolutely boggles my mind. I'm pretty sure it's religious in origin, like many other stupid and controlling beliefs.

Obviously much less emotional, but I once had a betta fish that was decaying rapidly and decided to euthanize it rather than drag things out. According to betta fish forums, the best way to euthanize them is with a hammer... Second best was to put it in a bag of rubbing alcohol. I couldn't do either, so I used the third best way, which was put them in ice cold water. It was lights out for the fish within a second or two.

would be nice if i could get my hands on that injection! maybe its worth considering becoming a vet - easy access to "peaceful stuff"!

as to your question: slaves can not be allowed to quit easily

Yeah, not very quick though - all that time and money studying!

Because of religion. And what the Nazis did.

But if you strip away the arguments roots you'll see it doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Excellent point, @Iwantoutrightnow. So many laws provide ethical and dignified death for animals, even religion chimes in with Halal etc.
But humans pay taxes, so they must live as long as they can.

Because dogs have more dignity than human beings.

People react totally differently to the suffering of animals and domestic pets than to that of their fellow human beings. One in five would prefer to donate to animal charities than to human ones [Yougov].

People are cruel, heartless bastards.

If this is behind it then humanity is so screwed!

It was devastating putting my dog to sleep, not just because I was going to miss her but because I had to make that decision for her. A human can make up their mind based on facts and weighing everything up but we are denied this and it is so wrong.
