anyone know much about this? how effective it is and how painful? and how to do it?
do you have to use a proper rope or can it just be anything like a shirt or a scarf?

It´s better to use a rope. It depends on your dorrs and door knob. Some are so poorly built that they will break or losen

I agree with what @Lady black said, strength of the rope and the door is the most important part. When I tried to hang myself in the psych ward, even the coat rack was strong enough to hold my weight.
