I find myself thinking thoughts like that too.Last night there was an earthquake centered close to where I live, and instead of getting alarmed,I hoped that it would be the "big one".People talking about North Korea and Iran and nuclear missile fears, doesn't effect me at all.I wish they would fire one right at my house.

It's basically a clock of an estimate based on technology/nuclear/climate/etc saying how close humanity is to extinction. Just an indication that everyone can get, without it being complicated so to speak

Does that mean we're gonna die at midnight?

Really that's the thing. The planet will generally always be here (shy of the sun expanding, black hole entering solar system, or other such thing), humans are in trouble--but the earth is fine ;) What we see is nothing really compared to what the earth really is.

It's a clock that is maintaned since 1947. It symbolizes the likehood of man-made catastrophe. Midnight represents the catastrophe. It is moved either forward or backwards every few years in the response to the events that are happening in world.

The thing with nuclear weapons is that death isn't necessarily instantaneous. A majority of inner city dwellers would be vaporized instantly, but if you are extremely unlucky, and I always am, you die of burns and radiation sickness over a few days, especially if your ctb kit is destroyed, or your hands are melted, and you can't use your method.

it's just an indication to how close things are given nothing changing. And since people now have not only a "thin'gs don't need to change" but a "let's make things worse, the environment isn't needed" philosophy, and apparently viruses are being thawed out from ice and things places--we're potentially screwing the human race in so many ways. And if they include all the wildfires which also makes things worse... it's a spiral effect. It's not a literal clock. The cold war was like 7 minutes to midnight--and we were facing nuclear war.

The clock was allegedly started by the scientists that created the atomic bombs used by the American military in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I don't know if that is a myth built up around the notion that some of them were allegedly remorseful, or if they actually were remorseful.

Ohhh
So let me try and clarify what you're telling me?
Pretty much, it's 100 seconds to midnight meaning that we're getting so close to the point that the things we're doing to the world will soon be irreversable? We're not going to legitamately die at midnight.

I just don't want us all to die because of some nuclear explosion, etc. I'd rather kill myself and let everyone here live on if that's what they want
It it was literal, humanity would've ended in 1947/whenever. Just seeing clock hands as a countdown means more than something people can't see.

Love me some radioactive ash, jk. Just makes me think of that prematurely cancelled show Jericho. And that shady corporation Jennings & Rall (rough analogue for Ernst & Young maybe?) that hangs around like a cockroach looking for everyone's debt after the apocalypse.

Luckily I'm in a major city. I hope I'm one of the vaporized ones. If I thought life is rough now...I dont wanna be around after something like that.

Lol I'm right at 25 miles from a major city so I'd probably just get the slow form of radiation poisoning

the end of the world is the only thing that turely scares me, this clock is something that's kinda been used against me since childhood (without using the clock)
Whilst the end of the world would be bliss, other parts of me states no, die alone, don't die as a mass, because there at that point is no point to existence, yes my mind is fucked, but the doomsday clock is in my top 3 of worst night mares!!

I think the humans will probably be fine too. Technology will keep advancing.

The US has always been raging or threatening war before I came into the world.
There were environmental issues then too.
