I'd ask why. Words are often spoken without much thought, and many times they stem from pity, selfish motives, or an attempt to achieve a specific goal. Take therapists and other professionals, for example. No one in this world can truly understand you better than you do. So when someone says something that resonates with you, it can trigger feelings because you believe they understand your emotions or hold the key to escaping your pain. But more often than not, that's not the case. I say "more often" because it depends on the situation and the specific struggles of the person contemplating death.
