Protesting the conditions of an inhumane world

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Perhaps one of the most often heard quotations in modern history, or at least one of the most memorable.

I don't know for certain where it comes from, though if I'm not mistaken it comes from the song "Don't Hate the Playa" by the American rapper Ice T.

The first time I had ever heard it was when I was nine years old, from my cousin. At the time, I didn't think much of it, because I just took at face value and thought of sports and video games and whatnot, which is probably what you'd expect from a nine year old anyway, and I didn't think it had any deeper meaning.

A decade later, however, I find "don't hate the player, hate the game" to have a whole new meaning.

Being alert to the absolute state of injustice and unfairness on this rotten earth, I've come to think of life itself as being like a game - in particular, a trip to the casino. Blackjack, slots, roulette, whatever casino game you prefer, they all have one thing in common: they are based entirely on luck, and in all likelihood, they are rigged against you. In a casino, there is the occasionally lucky winner who goes home rich, but the vast majority of people go home losers, out of whatever money they had when they entered.

I find life to be the same way. Except instead of a slot machine or a a roulette wheel, it's your DNA that determines whenever you win or lose. Just like the casino, life is going to be rigged against you (unless you're part of a very lucky, very small minority), and you don't get to choose your genes - it's all luck what you get.

Chances are, the way you were born is going to affect the way you are treated in life, either for the better or for the worse.

Those who are born with attractive, desirable traits, tend to be treated much better than their unattractive counterparts. They'll get much more opportunities (which tend to involve a lot more money), a lot more friends, and most likely praised to no end.

the worst part is, that there is no way to change the way you were born. So if you were born disabled, deformed, or with a body shape or height or other trait that you don't want, there's no sort of medicine or surgery to fix it. Sure, face lifts and other cosmetic surgeries exist, but not for the vast majority of problems that one could have, and there's no choice other than to live knowing you can't have what other people do have.

For this reason, I've found it very easy to resent those who were born the way I wish I could have been - the "players" who get all the advantages in life at the expense of people like myself. But even more so, I hate the "game" - life itself. And if the game is rigged against me, then I do not want to play the game. In other words, I'd like to quit the "game that is life" - or, bluntly speaking, CTB.

Here's another quote for anyone who's made it all the way to the bottom of my crazed rant, this time from the 1983 movie "WarGames", in reference to nuclear war but in my case, very true for life itself, and a good way to finish off a post that's gone on for long enough.

"The only winning move is not to play."

Hey, I agree that this is unfair game. I was born with good genes and in good family, but somehow still ended up "loosing". I met psychotherapist today and talking about my life I felt like a looser, worse the meeting felt impersonal and I feel ashamed for having to do that. Other weird thing is that I am afraid of being "normal" and getting lost in the dance of life, because I feel like It is completely pointless and broken.

I mean some people are nice, but we still have to slaughter animals so this nice people can eat them, we still need to use underpaid workers in poor countries and this whole fucking thing has no other point than just to perpetuate itself. It is scary to thing my life will consist of kicking the can down the road. Talking about my suicidal thoughts to therapist seamed wrong, even though life gives me so many problems and unknowns.

we are all (every sentient being) victims, on the same boat. even the ones who are apparently born in better conditions. same for the prolifers that defend the game of life. they are victim of the same illusion. maybe some won't ever realize what is behind the curtains, maybe some just need an epiphany to help them see the evil behind.
either way is just really tragic and sad.

True, being sentient is a b!@ch. Even if you are happy the fear of death is inevitable, same as loss of health or loved ones.

Yes, I agree. I think it is better to never be born in the first place as we are born into a world where there is unlimited potential for suffering. Some people are disadvantaged right from the start of their lives through no fault of their own. Factors out of our control can completely ruin our lives. Luck does determine everything and life is very unfair. It's why I believe in a right to die.

I often feel the same way and I agree completely with what you've said, however I'd like to add that it's not only genes that determine your attractiveness, but also genes that determine your intelligence
If you're unattractive but smart you can still make it, you can get a good job and get respect from other people
If you're unattractive and also not intelligent you're fucked

Yes, I relate to all of the above.

Many people can find themselves in a position where they have no real place in society, yet the same society demands that they 'think positive' and never imagining giving up. In turn, people conditioned into mainstream patterns don't want to face the hidden ugliness of their culture. The fact that the ecosystem suffers so much just for the human species to perpetuate all of its madness means that we really need to think independently.

The only counterpoint that should be raised is that 'success' is not always a simple thing to define, unless we limit ourselves to strictly Western values which would rate physical attractiveness, celebrity status and financial excesses as the only things of value. But there are other types of success, including what you have achieved in learning to 'forgive' those who have what you don't, or developing the critical thinking skills to see human insanity clearly.

It's much more complicated than that. When I looked at pics of me as a teen I am amazed at how handsome I was and yet at the time I felt ugly. I also did very well in school but my grades suffered because I was sleep deprived due to anxiety and lack of exercise and excessive studying. But I didn't realise it and just thought I was defective and incapable and that being gay did that to me.

This is what depression does. It completely distorts your thinking and makes you believe change isn't possible. Then you make mistakes and voila, it's a self fulfilling prophecy because now you're actually in a hole of your own making.

And guess what, regardless of your inherited appearance you can actually make huge changes to make yourself quite attractive. We have the knowledge nowadays. It's all on the Internet. All you have to do is learn what to eat and what exercise to do in order to lose as much fat as possible and gain as much muscle as you want. It even changes your facial appearance. Just look at before and after pics of people who got ripped and lost fat and compare their faces.

No, it's the truth. But it does take time, persistence, energy and enjoyment, all of which a suicidal person may be lacking.

I read your reply and share the same view, but the thing is that even the lucky ones can play with a losing hand. You talk about epiphany happening to people and you are not wrong but there is also the usual and monotonal detractors: trauma, depression, anxiety and so on.

It is tragic and sad, and the feeling of shame grows when you can count yourself in the "advantage group" but do not feel like one or are just not blind to it all. (Sorry for the banter)

To me this quote is used by people doing things they know harm other but justify it by "they didn't ask to be here"
These same people are the reason suicide is frowned upon and you can't hope to die peacefully but for the peace we make for ourselves.

Yes this quote is mindless and evil the way it's used.

Its applied to everything like a guy who gets a lot of women and another guy is jealous will be told "don't hate the player, hate the game" because women mostly go for being used and treated badly.

This quote expresses a corrupt evil and sick society by the cheesy stupid quote it is.

It is difficult to accept that there are things that do not depend on you (Chance does influence)

If you know that there will not be much difference in the future, taking into account the time you have lived, it is better to leave before regretting it.
An unborn cannot suffer, a dead neither.

For some people whose life promises nothing more than just suffering for the very conditions in which they live, death is more hopeful than life because only in life is it possible the suffering.

Certainly the idea of suicide is not a bad move, because you avoid multiple, incalculable, unlimited and potential sufferings.

By not bringing new individuals into existence and into this world, you are saving them from suffering, which I think is good.

Not to be to avoid suffering.

All this is my personal opinion.

Greetings

This reminds me of all the type of things mental health professionals and activists like to say.

As if someone hasn't overcome all their challenges because they aren't trying hard enough. You even say doing these things is difficult for someone suicidal so how could they possibly be achieved considering the state of society's utter neglect toward psychological wellbeing?

It's all depressed people's fault for being depressed, even though it's supposedly a chemical imbalance, guess it's just a fault of character after all.

Let me just go and gain the will to live in this world by jogging.

Nowhere did I ever imply any of this. I seem to struck a nerve because you're putting words in my mouth. I was just responding to the bit about being attractive and how ones attractiveness is not immutable and the means by which one could potentially make alterations, because I see this a lot and perhaps some people could make those changes when they can. Calm down.

Believe that there is a way to lose fat and gain muscle via particular diet and exercise and that this changes one's appearance? Or that losing the fat in one's neck and face causes it to look differently? Yes, of course, you'd be ignorant not to, and there are millions of people who have done this.

Of course there's a way to lose weight & gain muscle, but most people can't "make huge changes to make themselves quite attractive regardless of their inherited appearance" without surgery. Also, a face with less fat doesn't necessarily look better. In fact, older chubby men & women usually have more attractive & younger-looking faces than skinny folks their age. But you're free to believe anything you want - I hope you get ripped as fuck & fuck the entire English football team :)):sunglasses:

In any case, many people have made dramatic changes to their bodies by essentially following a formula, and that alone can change the way the face is perceived, or take the pressure off the face if you know what I mean.
