I've always wanted to help people and spread good and care for people in anyway possible.

Have any of you signed up to donate your organs after your death? Our organs are just so important and so many people are waiting, suffering and dying to have a chance to live. If i have an opportunity to live and someone else doesnt have that same opportunity to live but wants to, i think its for the best to donate my organs to those in need. Reading that you can easily save another persons life and still spread good even after your gone is amazing. And its at no cost really. Thousands are waiting on a list to have an opportunity to further live and survive.

What do you guys think? Is it stupid to do?

In theory it's a nice idea. In practice by the time you are found your organs will have likely deteriorated so much they'll be unusable. Certain methods like drugs or jumping will have that effect anyway.

Since reason dictates making sure one isn't found prematurely I don't see how one can CTB and actually donate one's organs.

In an ideal world suicide would be legal, one could go to a hospital to die peacefully and one's organs could be harvested immidiately after death saving at least one's person's life. Alas society is not that enlightened.

Been signed as an organ donor for as long as I have been able to. Though, you really have to pretty much die in a hospital to actually have your organs donated due to how the process goes. So it's all for naught.

Exactly. Many suicide methods render your organs useless, even if you're found right after death. Also, if I remember correctly, there are plenty of countries/states where organ donations of those who committed suicide are not accepted, even if the organs are viable. You can donate your body to science though.

Im either taking N or SN. I hope through maybe even N, there would be organs that could be used to help someone :(

Do not despair: you might get hit by a car, be rushed to the hospital and die there ;-).

I've researched and the only organ donations that are accepted here are either brain or circulatory deaths, in a hospital while on a ventilator. There are 1200 deaths this way annually and still only 500 deaths of them are used for organ donation. It will not be considered outside of these circumstances. That's why there's so few organ donations (500 deaths annually) and such a horribly long waiting list. It's a big problem here and a great thought, but nearly impossible for us to achieve I think.

Definitely not. There's case reports of animals dying after digging up and eating dead euthanised animals. This particular case 2 dogs died after eating some of a horse that had been euthanised with N (and not buried sufficiently). This is why there's very strict rules around animal body disposal, after being euthanised at the vets with N.

Oxygen deprivation would prevent it anyways. A nice thought but sadly not possible for us.

I know that some recipients of physician-assisted suicide have have had their organs donated, so N must leave at least some organs viable for transplantation. However, it's my understanding that this needs to happen fairly quickly after death. As Jean Amery said, by the time we're found it's unlikely that any of our organs will still be usable. Tissue donation may still be possible however.

I suppose if anyone in that state of mind really wants to donate the best bet would be to walk into a hospital and shoot oneself in the head holding an organ donor card in the other hand. Of course there's a good chance of rescue if the gunshot was slightly off and didn't destroy the brainstem.

In all seriousness: I've considered this aswell (it would be a nice gesture saving a few people with one's organs) but practically speaking it cannot be done under present circumstances.

I guess this should be filed under the list 'grudges against society' and deserves to be put into a suicide note.

Hah, I am not the only one who has thought about this. I don't know if I could do it even if I had a gun, but it's one of those weird ideas and fantasies I have. And really, it's pretty much the only way I think I could get my organs donated.

Cant donate even if I wanted to consider how long my body will be found afterward. Most organ will be useless after 3 hours. All because some dumb cuants doesnt allow assisted suicide.

To clarify: I did not mean I thought about shooting myself in a hospital. I did think about ways my death could be useful to others (donation of organs among other things) but in this case I've come to the conclusion it can't be done. Certainly not for me as I don't own a gun and I have no intention of dying by means of it.

I think i signed up to have my organs donated with outlook that:
  • If die by suicide - then it won't happen
  • But just in case some miracle happens and i die by accident then i can get my organs donated.
All options covered that way.

My organs would only be good for studies on the effects of taking drugs and trashing your body for 15 years

It's nice and all, but they likely aren't gonna take care of themselves unless maybe it's a kid. idk if kid's can use an adult's organs though, I can imagine some issues occuring.

Not uncommon for the patient's immune system to attack the foreign object either. STEM cell R&D seems better.

Organ donations and suicide? Hmm...

Yes, I signed up to be an organ donor 6 years ago. At the very least I can feel some good came out of my life, if my death allows for someone who wants to live to be able to prolong their life, like a parent who has kids depending on them. At least I can feel less guilty and selfish.

Generally you have to die in hospital and/or be on life support to be able to donate your organs. Might be some exceptions but yeah, that's the gist.

So no it is most likely never an option for those committing suicide. Sorry to burst anybody's bubble.

It's not a bubble. As GreyMagic noted above, carrying an organ donor card is a way to cover various options. I've also designated that my body should be used for anatomy class or pathology training or whatever.

I was told I cant donate because it will be suspicious and the authorities will think somebody made me kill myself so they could get my organs. But also, my method of choice will kinda grind them to mush so nobody would benefit anyway
