• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

I got curious about what these forums would have looked like before now. I stumbled upon ASH and, come to find out, there's an entire web archive of poems and old methods that I haven't seen before. It resonates with me, just like this place. If anyone knows about it, please share what you know. šŸ–¤

I haven't looked at anything in the archives yet, but I had lurked on the usenet group back in 2000. That basically worked like a mailing list, and replies were grouped into threads. Traffic was definitely lower than here. I don't remember much of it, but at one point there was a flamewar and a guy posted his phonenumber for people to call him if they needed help IIRC.

So no forum games, and I think there were also no images in those mails back then. Replies contained quotes of the original messages, and people carefully managed those quotes by inserting markers "Snipped, but read" to make sure people knew they had not skipped their texts.

In most usegroups, people would argue about whether one should post above or below the quoted message, but I don't remember whether that was also the case there.

That's all I remember, except for the greeting "Welcome to ASH, sorry you're here" and people then quickly clarifying in the next sentence that it was a traditional ASH greeting.

I also don't remember whether I was really suicidal at that time, but it was definitely after my first preparations for an attempt.

Also, I found SaSu by googling the ASH group.

Edit: I think at that time, I accessed it through my ISP's newsgroup server, and I did not know how to use a different e-mail address with it, so I was afraid that I could not post anonymously. And I was reading it through my regular Outlook instance, which was not as safe as using "Incognito mode" in the browser when the PC might be used by someone else from time to time. I feel really old now :)

O, I was mistaken thought you were referring to another archived web, haven't seen this one before, apologies.
No worries, thank you for telling me about the other one as well.

ASH was notable, but became defunct when I believe it became too controversial, and that's about when this one started. I believe it was at ASH where "CTB" became the acronym of choice.
