I am not sure. I am also not sure how many of the elites are suicidal. There was if think 2,5 years ago a German federal treasure secretary who committed suicide. He was a christian conservative the party which wants to deny assisted suicide rights by any means. I think he had depressions and the covid crisis increased his pain. Though I don't want to make too many speculations.
I have the feeling many of the elites were/are very scared about the outing. Showing a weakness in a high position can be really detrimental. I could imagine many of them are on the surface really strong pro-life but secretly they have another stance on it. The stigmitization is pretty rough.
I could imagine many people have a cognitive/emotional dissonance in this instance. Especially if you are surrounded by many religious people this must be pretty horrible. I have read that from members who have to act like they would share specific religious beliefs (due to the country were they live). This must be awful and very painful.
It is pretty insane how much power the evangelicals in the US have. I am really glad that my country is more secular and prone to atheism. The direction is the right one you can also see that in surveys about assisted suicide.
I don't want to mock the conservatives/religions too much. There is a lot of charity and voluntary work the religous people do. This is pretty good for poor people. But I don't like how paternalistic they behave. I don't share your religious beliefs why should I believe in your stigmatization of assisted suicide? I don't force you to apply for it. It is my life. I can agree that it should not be a decision solely on impulse. The person should have a consistent and persistent wish to die.
But when I read how they treat mentally ill I am just so sick about the paternalism. It is true I am mentally ill. But this does not mean that all my wishes are irrational, what am I a child? I am allowed to drive a car, sign contracts which could ruin all my financials, I have to do everyday important choices. If I was that ill and irrational the people had to lock me up forever because I could jump in front of a train any time.
Maybe this was a little bit off-topic. I am just still mad the politicians of my country want to resist the liberal assisted suicide ruling of the highest court. I have the feeling many of these religious people are hypocrites. You can see how prude they present themselves but in secret they watch hardcore porn anyway. Statistics prove that. Not for all of them but for many this is true.
My conclusion: I think many of them are too scared about the stigmatization so that they would not be fully openly in favor of more liberal assisted suicide laws etc.
