Discussion Do you think the world will ever accept suicide?

I've been really pondering this today and I wanted to hear some ideas

absolutely not, never. unfortunately. did u see the amount of pushback & outcry MAID for the terminally ill got & is still getting??? that's when i knew there was no hope for the majority of the populace.

i worked as an assistant for a Senator in WA when MAID was being moved through. the amount of angry emails & phone calls & visits we got abt it, along w their 'reasons' for why it's disgraceful & should never be allowed (some even going so far as to say suicide as a whole should be criminalized) were mind blowing & so disheartening. i thought i couldn't be surprised by the sheer stupidity of ppl & the staggering # of them it afflicts anymore, but i alwaysssssssssss manage to be. when i can finally get the courage to kms is when i no longer will

Never. Powerful people control the media and big business. These people don't want normal and poor people to commit suicide since they'd lose on tax money and consumers that buy their products. Edit: So all the pro suicide sites and movements will get supressed.

If it does, I tihink it will probably coincide with the overpopulation crash predicted to happen 60 years from now. I think 6 more decades of de-evolution and 25% larger population than today will be enough for governments worldwide to finally say "You know what? Maybe it isn't a bad idea for a bunch of to off yourselves, if you so choose"

unfortunatly i don't think so, it really seems like something a majority of people themselves would have to stand up against, but the majority of people now consider suicide as an evil act so... probably not

There is to much money to be made off human suffering,
so "NO" probably won't see suicide legalized till laws are enacted to harvest organs for profit, wether you left an advanced directive or not.
Those with money and power are not concerned with curing disease, mental or physical, just making more money.
There is no profit in fixing/healing/curing the mindset or medical conditions associated with the human condition.

Coming from generally a negative person, I say yes. For sure. 100%. Maybe not in our lifetime, but eventually. Social norms change all the time. Laws change accordingly. In some places abortion wasn't legal either until they legalized it, and in other places it's still a matter of debate. Cannabis is another good example. Assisted suicide wasn't a thing either.

It won't happen overnight, it'll prob be a long, pain-in-the-butt process, what with bureaucracy and all, but the full right to die will sooner or later be normalized. Then they will install suicide booths everywhere, like in Futurama. Of course then we'll have to open a GoFundMe account because the govs. will not pass on the opportunity to make big $$ at our expense. So other ways, like N, will become available. It will turn into a real business. An industry. Then, due to the competition, we will eventually have access to more affordable options. Gas rates will still be high though.

Critical thinking is dead, so expecting people that aren't suicidial to understand why others want to commit suicide, and then to also support them in their decision is basically impossible. Virtue signalling for points will continue as usual though.

i agree. adding on- with how things are going now, if famine, disease, etc. (sort of apocalypse scenario?) become a more prevalent worldwide issue then i can definitely also see the governments being more accepting of suicide. and even if the governments never come around, (seeing as we're always dispensable- and much more useful- in war) the general populace will. eventually the world will be such a shit place that nobody will want to live, except maybe the 1%.

Stupidity, illogical bias, and cognitive dissonance sadly cannot be cured. The majority of people's brains can't accept the most basic facts. It's almost unbelievable that we're not extinct yet.

No. Wanting to live is mostly a human universal. It is because the species has one underlying goal purely biologically speaking no matter how much we (read: society as a whole) pretend to be tolerant of differences - reproduction. So there are outliers too but some are more acceptable than others.

Not wanting to reproduce is seen as mostly acceptable. Being LGBT is seen as somewhat acceptable too (depends on the country). But these things do not threaten the larger narrative that life is worthy onto itself. This is the preprosition of every society.

Many Atheists may believe that life has no inherent value but they'd still reject the idea of suicide as a valid option for the most part. This is not just a religious idea but it's so ingrained in all societies that it can be seen as a given.

Not right now, But I do think there's a pretty good chance in the near future that it'll be more widely accepted.

The stigma is coming mainly from the Christian religion.

no. It keeps drugs companies making billions to make us feel better. So, no I doubt it very much. Could it be abused? I'm all in for dignity in dying but not to euthanize grandma to get her house lol

Yes certainly. You can already see it in right wing governments who would love to see the disabled, unemployed and poor people dead.

Here in the UK suicide rates have gone up every year over the last decade. Our government seems to do anything it can to make people's lives difficult and encourage them to end their lives. They also cut funding and resources that can help in health services.

I can never get my head around people who say the UK is anti-suicide, we are the opposite. Our government is massacring people with its pro-suicide stance.

I think people will accept it under certain circumstances- terminally/ chronically ill people.

I doubt it will be accepted in general unless how the world operates changes significantly. If AI take most of our jobs, maybe the way people make money will change. I'm sure it will still be a capitalist society. I wonder if it will be so reliant on consummerism though. Maybe it will go even more that way.

I reckon with global warming, freak weather and 'natural' disasters are going to become more prevalent. I actually wonder if it will be more likely that people will stop breeding so much. Who wants to live somewhere that is either being flooded, battered by gale force winds or is on fire every few months?!!

I really wish so, but sadly I believe that so many humans are way too selfish and deluded to see suicide as a valid option, there is also the fact that the society needs slaves which is why I believe there is so much brainwashing to try and make people believe that wanting suicide is "irrational" even know it's anything but.
It's just so hellish how suicide isn't seen as a rational solution to escape from and prevent suffering even know we never consented to this existence and aren't obligated to continue. It's disgusting how many humans wish to make suicide so inaccessible even know there is no limit as to how much one can suffer as long as they are enslaved in this futile and meaningless existence.
