Do you think society (globally) is heading towards a collapse of some sort? If you do, please say/discuss how and why you think this?

I personally think that society (globally) is heading towards a collapse of some sort, although the effects of it will mostly be felt in developed countries where oil/gas/coal usage is high, such as Europe, North America (US/Canada), Australia/New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China, etc. Also, I believe (based on what scientists are saying) that the gulfstream will collapse between now and 2050 or maybe slightly later and that will also add to the calamity of the situation.

The monetary systems we have are also not good because most people in the developed world are working for literal peanuts just to make ends meet, so they can just about afford the basics such as food, water, clothing, shelter, etc. Maybe sometimes having a little bit left over to spend on other miscellaneous stuff such as computers/laptops, phones, cars, travel/holidays and other treats, etc. Basically poverty is rampant nowadays and even though people are working, they're still not able to afford things (such as cars, houses and other stuff that costs loads of money, etc.). More younger adults (such as myself being in my late 20s) and middle aged adults (30s and 40s) are still living in shared accommodation, such as living with parents, family or friends.

I also believe that birth rates are quite low and that will have some kinda impact on society, but this may be ever so slightly mitigated with the use of artificial intelligence and robots filling in the gaps where humans aren't there. Lastly, I think that artificial intelligence and robots pose somewhat of a threat to humanity on top of everything else. I have more to say, but I don't want to ramble too much and I would very much like to hear other people's views on this topic.

I kind of hope it collapses soon tbh. Hope someone sets off a few massive weapons of mass destruction killing most of the humans and hopefully I'm lucky enough to be one of them :)

To be honest, I say that it's a solid yes. If you saw movies/series like Mr. Robot, Blade Runner 2049 or Taxi Driver, you notice that they somewhat represent how the present situations are currently developing. The downfall, how technology replaces human interaction, how people embrace loneliness to the point where they just got used to it and many more things. At this point you could just put on the VR headset, put on the Po*nHub toy on your "tool" and watch some of the "interactive" videos to get IRL like s*x experience.
There's also the thing where the "gay month" (as called by the ignorant normies) where all the LGBT folks are getting a whole month dedicated to their "stuff" but something like men's mental health awareness "action" is just a single day instead of a whole month.

I also notice how normal it is to accepted it is to have no "work life balance" at workplaces like I'm working, I didn't had any free time like my cheap ebay Steam Deck I fixed was only used for 3 hours at least, my Xbox One X wasn't turned on for 4 months, my Xbox Series X that I traded for the One X was only used for 6 hours and I got it like 9 days ago. It's like
"we, as your employer, don't care about the fact that you have little to no work life balance, it's unhealthy but it's now important. You all are just a employee number in our system, just an empty husk that obeys our instructions."

Yeah, the idea of collapse in America is sort of an underlying feeling.

I think a lot of people feel this. Maybe even deep down, lots of people want it to happen. We tend to forget how crazy this world is, technology has become so engrained into our society that we forget how crazy it is to be alive during this era. Never before could the average person work from home, have all their products delivered to their door, have their food delivered to their door, and has been able to call a personal driver to go anywhere they want. We have all these comforts, we live in such a new world that our brains are not used to. No longer do men or women play certain roles in society, that has all gone out the window. Even though technology and innovation has helped society in many ways, it has also lead to our detriment and suicides now kill more people than war itself. Our minds crave a dystopian world. That's a reason why all these dystopian / sci-fi / apocalyptic movies appeal to us. Because deep down we yearn for it. With as much entertainment as there is.. in a way we actually live in a boring world, you go to your job, come home, eat, sleep, repeat. People lack meaning, fulfillment, a sense of belonging, and a sense of having an actual role in society or family. We face inequality and work like slaves for the rest of our lives, going to the grave without ever leaving a mark on the world. But in a world that has collapsed, the whole script gets flipped.

no, not really. people always predict the world will end in this way or that way, that society will crumble one way or another, but i think we're... too far for that to happen. I mean, we've literally used nuclear weapons on one another, mitigated disasters such as the 2015 typhoons in Japan that probably would've just eradicated a population before, as well as so many other things. I see no reason to believe the world is coming to an end and I typically don't entertain such ideas anyway because I feel like they're made by people who are implicitly trying to reach some other goal through those whom they convinced.

Hard to say. There are a lot of pressing issues in modern day society that could potentially lead to socially disastrous consequences if not fixed. This includes demographics (at least for first world nations), climate change, and the rise of AI and new technology potentially lead to job losses.

Yeah I think so. I think inevitably late stage capitalism will collapse. I don't think this current societal framework/model is sustainable. People are being overworked for slave wages; meanwhile the cost of living is increasing every year. People are living paycheck to paycheck barely being able to make ends meet. I think that no one is truly happy with their lives. Hopefully people wake up and realize that there should be more to life than this. Life should be fulfilling and meaningful, not about having to make money and support ourselves in a world where merely having to exist costs money. Also with the current state of our economy, I think there's bound to be a collapse soon. It's inevitable imo. It's just a matter of when

Let's bring this thread back to life seeing as another war/conflict has recently broken out in the world. This thread is becoming more relevant now.

In the foreseeable future: no; I do not think that humanity as a whole will collapse. There are states that could collapse, new countries which could be formed due to
shifting borders, and cultures that might die. Though as a species human beings will continue to exist - in my opinion.

...But having said all of this: there could be a new conflict that starts, and grows larger, dragging in more and more people. Considering the advanced weapons that certain nations have this could potentially cause an extinction.

Society is already bad, but I don't think civilization will ever collapse in our lifetimes. There will always be wars, famine, shortages and other events and global disasters, and humans will persist, like cockroaches. Thanks for notifying about recent war/conflict.

Theres been a societal collapse thats been happening for thousands of years in the making, but we're adaptable in the sense that the future generation will cater to their own needs when the time comes, so I don't really care about exactly how retarded shit like the economy or societal norms devolves to be, we'll just keep doing whatever we do to survive. There is, however, a pretty solid date for destructive environmental changes, we got about 6 or 7 years left before we fuck up the planet irreversibly and thats when our species "adapting" will probably look more like the space age shit everyone used to get wet over, like building spaceships to mars and whatever. Hopefully we kill the planet and die off entirely. I don't care about this stupid ass planet.

Yes. Even a cursory reading of history reveals thousands of civilizations who all thought that they would last the test of time. We are no different. Even though we have become more clever at exploiting natural resources, we still ultimately live on a finite planet. Even if global warming and habitat destruction are somehow non-issues, I don't see how we can escape limits to resources, particularly non-renewables. Renewable energy sources heretofore require rare earth minerals we use oil to extract and fossil fuels to refine. We need a miracle technology like cold fusion. I found the book, Immoderate Greatness: Why Civilizations Fail persuasive. I cannot remember other sources off the top of my head, but they are based on the seminal paper, Limits to Growth.
