Do you think average person has the knowledge to recognize that SN is a lethal substance or do they just think it's any other chemical, I'm asking b/c my mother has seen my order, I don't want her to have any kind of suspicions. Someone plz answer quick??

If I were in this situation I would probably say that I saw online how to make smoked/cured meats and was thinking to take it up as something to do like a hobby. That I had a craving for cured meats and wanted to do it myself.

Good luck.

I don't think that it's very common to know the effects of a nitrite if you don't are a chemical or don't work with it.

But I also think that she can get suspicious and make a quick search and discover the SN properties and usages. Why should you buy a chemical in first place?I suppose she can start making this question, don't you think?

I've told her it's for food chemistry so there's no question; she doesn't really care at all

I think you should be ok. Just store it in a safe place that it won't be found. To answer your original question.
I doubt most people know what it can be used for. I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for S.S.
