Discussion Dignity in dying

I wonder if in my lifetime there will ever been a law passed that allows dignity in dying which includes mentally ill people.
I feel ashamed to belong to a world that helps their sick animals die with dignity but not their people. I'm not saying I want to die now but if this was an option further down the line for me then the life I live right now would be a better one.

I have said this to the authorities over and over. Their reply will be familiar to us all. That this is just a blip and things will get better. They won't acknowledge that some mentally ill people won't get better or that some, like myself, don't even consider ourselves 'ill'. I don't see the law changing in our lifetime if ever.

There are some progressive countries like the Netherlands and Switzerland. But in places like the UK where you have Bishops sitting in the House of Lords (clear distinction of church and state!!!) you would have a hard time. I think the tide is turning, all be it slowly. Any changes will obviously be those with end of life conditions to end their suffering. With regard to MH, that will be a completely different debate and my guess (sadly) is it would take decades if not longer to be approached as a change in the law.

I get that some people will use this to their advantage to kill off their rich old granny but if say you are of sound mind and you meet with 2 Drs and a solicitor so it's all done legally then no one could abuse the system.

2 doctors and a solicitor? And those are the people that are making sure it is not happening right now!

its easier to shew it away with the it will get better speech. nobody wants to deal with it because it unveils truth in the world.

It will never happen. We can't even sort Brexit here in the UK. It would take an enlightened societyto tackle such a huge issue.

I highly doubt I will see a law to assist mentally ill people with assisted suicide.
religion, personal beliefs and the people unable to accept that not everyone is delighted to be alive stands in the way and will continues to do so in the foreseeable future.
