I told my girlfriend of 2 years I have depression a few weeks ago. She asks me what I'm feeling but I tell her I don't know.

I don't tell her about the thoughts in my head.

Though she notices when I drift away in my thoughts.

I read that it helps to talk to someone. But how does one find the right psychiatrist?

Did you tell anyone? Do you talk to someone?

First, Welcome!

A psychiatrist is for medication and generally does not provide therapy.

I think you would be better off with a therapist, psychologist, or social worker.

I don't know your country or insurance, but one can call the insurance company to obtain a list of providers who accepts your insurance.

In my experience it usually always helps to talk, and in my case I do better talking with nonprofessional positive energy type people, like some sort of 12 step program is a good place to find these types of people, there are good therapists, counselors, and so on as Jean4 stated. But unfortunately if you don't have insurance, or it is bunky you may get less than what you deserve as far as professional services. My suggestion is free.

And also please, please, be extremely cautious about medication. Also from my experience, among many others I have read, talked to meds can have some serious consequences. I suggest heavy research prior to taking meds. Lots of doctors get kick backs ($) from prescribing medications. There motivation is money not your well being. You should be proud of yourself imo, you are here talking. That is a fantastic thing!!

Peace be with you

Telling a therapist might help. Just be careful not to say that you're actively suicidal or actively going to hurt yourself if you are and you don't want to be involuntarily hospitalized You could also try writing your gf a letter that way you can decide how much you want to share the first time
