While I want the one R2D sells. It is taking too long for them to start back up orders, and it could be forever in this limbo. Does anyone have a parts list of what is needed? (I'm having problems finding out how much soda lime I need and the cans I need to put them into.)

I'm at the point if I had it in hand, I would make my final prep and just use it within an hour.

A member here named TrailerTrash has built his own debreather device which he says corrects several flaws/limitations with the R2D version. He said he plans to post pics and details about it very shortly.

You can read more about it here:

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know there was any massive flaws with it.

You can also ask questions to @r2d2020 if he's still around

Chiming in here since I recently finished and tested my hypoxia 'debreather' device. My first test was yesterday for airflow and CO2 absorption. I exhaled/inhaled five times, not enough to start to feel hypoxic, yet it was enough to test my CO2 'alert system'. The good news is that it worked perfectly, breathing was easy and air flowed well in both directions. My next test will be with a pulse oximeter since I want to know how quickly my O2 drops.

Below are some details, experiences and opinions on the debreather that right2die will be selling (hopefully someday soon) and comparisons to my hypoxia device.

My device is a bi-directional, single circuit, which means exhaled air flows through one tube into the canister that contains CO2 absorbent, next into the counterlung, then the reverse on inhalation. I decided not to replicate the debreather due to complexity, I didn't feel that it needed to be a two circuit system. The debreather system uses a loop that only allows air to flow in one direction using, one way valves and uses ventilator tubing, two CO2 absorbent chambers and one counterlung. They chose this system to eliminate the possibility of CO2 re-entering the lungs which would result in the CO2 alert system being activated and could eventually cause the person to remove their mask due to severe discomfort. In my device the only remaining CO2 would be in the single tube (CPAP) that enters the CO2 absorption chamber. As expected the amount of CO2 that remains in the tube is insignificant and is reduced during each breath since no new oxygen is added to the system. It's important to note that CO2 tolerance varies from person to person.

Now about the mask...I've seen a lot of talk about this, mostly concern which makes sense since it's an important part of the device, probably the most important. That being said any of these devices need completely sealed to prevent leaks. I tested every part of my system, including a couple of masks. I ended up using a high quality CPAP mask, not the mask that they chose for the debreather. The reason is fit, since CPAP masks are designed to be worn during sleep so comfort is very important, as is the seal. The only minor issue is that CPAP is a partially open system, unlike the debreather which needs to completely closed. This meant that I had to modify the mask by closing off all the vent holes, which was easy. The mask is very comfortable and uses a soft silicone for the face seal and a comfortable head strap/harness system. I tested the mask in the same way that the debreather shows, simply by covering the hose connection port and exhaling, ensuring there were no air leaks around the mask. One thing I don't like how the debreather is that it needs to strapped to the body, this was in part due to how they chose to build the mask/tubing system. Since my device only has one tube that is connected to the CPAP mask (with a swivel). The whole unit is strapped to a stable and protected platform which can lay next to me. All my hoses are secured with hose clamps so they can't be pulled apart.

I will report more after my test with the pulse oximeter.

Note: I am happy to respond to questions as I want to help those considering this method, however I am not willing to post photos, plans or give exact details of how I built my device. Please reply here, not using PM. Thanks.

R2d2020 hasn't been on in two months. Also I recall him saying that although he'd built his own debreather he wasn't going to post pics/details of it.

TrailerTrash has a lot of tech knowledgment, I don't know if a random person would be able to build a reliable unit. Certainly I think I would not.

But he said he'd answer questions in pm (bottom of his post)

I hear you. I'm in the same boat. I have many issues that have led me to this place. I have an Exit Bag setup, but worry about SI related fails. It's really hard for me to imagine what living with a fail might be like psycho-emotionally. I do believe in the Debreather concept, but I also am not on board with wait, or the quality control/mask issues. It sounds like we both are ready to move on, and we would like to have access to a peaceful method soon. I'm older, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to have access to the parts, and will be able to build a better version when the list is available soon by another member.

That depends on how they spell out how they went about it. The biggest thing is a parts list. Even more the about places someone can get them. Like I have no idea where to get the cans for this. Let alone some of the other things. Like I know you can get soda lime for aquariums. But I have no idea how much is needed.

But if they are detailed enough, then I would think an average person can put it together

I have bought one to right2die, stll waiting for the delivery, don't have any reason to think I'm building one better than them. But I'm worried about the fitting of the mask, since last edition PPH says it could be better, besides I've an hemifacial spasm, so this strengthens the importance of a very stable airtight seal.

You need enough at least to cover your tidal volume so you are not inhaling/exhaling under pressure. 100g soda absorbs Co2 from 26L of air before exhaustion.

And average tidal volume of a healthy adult is around 900ml to 1 L iirc.

I had no problems sourcing anything. Its a matter of understanding what is needed and then looking for it. One way valves are key - the air must be forced through soda without the potential for backflow of untreated air on inhalation.

I will buy one when the store will be back, and when the time is come, I plan to put myself in a large bag like a 500L garbage bag with the less of air inside as possible, then use the debreather to lose my consciousness, so if an hemifacial spasm throw out the mask, the bag should take the relay.

I don't know if it will very work or be usefull, but maybe find my body inside a trash bag can help to prevent trauma for the person who will discover the body, or help the peoples who will have to move the body away.

I don't think that bag is a solution, imho.

I really don't know, it's something I've imagined in case if the mask don't work as expected, but at the moment I don't have the debreather yet and as long is something that I want, it's not very planned already. I will continue to inform me and I will see when the time come.
